Unexpectedly love this camera more than any other! After borrowing a friend D90 a bunch of times, i knew i wanted my own. After checking out a local camera shop I was torn between the D90 and D5100. I did a lot of research and decided on the D5100 as my camera. I really liked the D90 everytime i used it, but now after using the D5100 i would never look back. Its easy to use, has a ton of cool features, and the swivel screen LCD display comes in handy more times than you'd ever imagine. November 23, 2011
In Love with this babe Its pretty nice camera even if it half frame one it gave you a diff taste and diff stage July 16, 2012
Great Step UP I've been a point and shooter for 35 years and finally decided to step up to a digital SLR. Did a LOT of research befor I decided on the D5100. I purchased the 5100 about 3 months ago and am still learning about all of the things that I can do with this camera. Meanwhile I;m getting great photos and movies by setting the dial to auto or one of the scene modes. The function buttons seem to be located where they are easy to find and as I use it more I am able to find most of them without removeing my eye from the VF. Speaking of which the view finder is bright, clear and easy to use with all of the info you need visible. I like the autofocus positions in the VF and the ability to move the point of focus, comes in very handy for those off center subjects. I was concerned about the additional weight of a DSLR vs a P&S but I find this is not a problem for me. I added the Nikon 18-105mm lens to my bag which gives me the extra reach I wanted and only adds 4 or 5 oz. to the unit. Love that lens. I am glad I got this camera and expect to have this one for a long time. July 14, 2012
Ease of use This is my first "real camera" and I'm loving it. I've only had it two weeks, but I love the ease of use. Thank you. July 12, 2012
So far, so good! Plan to take a course with a professional photographer to learn how to get the most out of our D5100.. Probably will get a longer than 200mm telephoto lens. July 11, 2012

Answer:
u can photograph anything you want , if u have a tripod, open up aperture to fastest setting and remember , the stars will start to become tiny lines after a little time cos earth is moving...

if you are asking is 8 seconds long enough, probably not if you want stars n space...
i shoot the moon with D2X on 2.8 70-200mm and cam set to spot metering at about 1/500 sec, but thats just the moon and it is bright.
I would say try it
open up aperture to as fast as u can and set cam on something stable or tripod and let it go...

the question is posted for D5100, but you ask about P500 coolpix???

Long Exposure + Timer interval shooting

When I try to do a long series of long exposure shots over a scheduled interval, the camera seems to crash and stop shooting. Right now I've been trying to shoot a set of 480 shots, each one a 30 second exposure, every 30 seconds. After about 100-200 shots, the series stops recording. There's plenty of room on the memory card. Any thoughts? I switched the image size from large to small, and the number of images before a failure increased (from 100 to about 200), but the series still didn't finish.

image quality is set to jpeg fine.

3 brackets at 1/3 to 1/2 each seems a bit limited for good HDR post processing. I'd like to either be able to shoot the 3 brackets further apart (1 EV) or more brackets, such as 5. Is there a way to program or automate this process with the D5100?

In the D5100 the HDR can be set to On or Off (see page #79 of user's manual), and the Exposure Bracketing the camera will vary exposure with each shot. The first shot will be taken at the value currently selected for the exposure compensation.

Wouldn't it be just a software tweak that can be written and then downloaded? It is a big disappointment to not have this feature and it is a disappointment with other D5100 owners that I have contacted to see if they knew where it was in the menu.
Please see if something can be done to include such a simple yet valuable feature to the D5100.

Answer:
That will depend on the model of your camera. The camera is equipped with a memory buffer for temporary storage, allowing shooting to continue while photographs are being saved to the memory card. The approximate number of images that can be stored at current settings is shown in the exposure-count display in the viewfinder and control panel while the shutter-release button is pressed (see user's manual of your camera for buffer capacity).

Answer:
There's no internal motor on the D5100 so it will only auto-focus with AF-S lenses, lenses that have built in motors.

Answer:
The lens on the P100 the angle of view equivalent to that of 26-678mm lens in 35mm [135] format. If you’re using the D5100 with a 300mm lens still the P100 will give you more zoom range at 678mm. Also, the new P500 the angle of view equivalent to that of 22.5-810 mm lens in 35mm [135] format.

On my D70 I am able to hit the up arrow to scroll through different information, such as EXIF info, histogram, and highlights. I can't figure out how to do this on the D5100. What I am most interested in is the EXIF info so I can quickly see what speed/aperature/ISO the picture was taken at.
