Exquisite detail in highlight and shadow

In scenes with extreme contrasts, such as bright, sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render the textures of both equally. Not any more. D5100 combines two exposures to create an image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before.
Capture every detail with remarkable clarity—the D5100 brings image quality in a class of its own.

Stunning image quality

Good Performance for a Good Price It is my first DSLR and I am amazed with it, because it has all the necessary elements that you need when you are interested in learning photography. it has an incredible image quality and color reproduction that I never got from a digital camera and also a good performance in low light conditions. No one of my photos has been modified with special Software, I only convert them from RAW to JPEG, and they were taken using M,P and S modes only. October 4, 2014
it gives all benefits in one.Nice to use it. First of all i would like to say that its looks very gorgeous. So much comfortable to handle. Its picture quality is superb.I think it is all in one. August 11, 2014
Amazing Camera!! The d5100 has allowed me to take the next step in photography. I love using it and can't wait to build my knowledge of photography by continuing to use it. May 31, 2014
Great First DSLR I printed out the complete manual that came on the CD, learned where all of the controls were and took a digital photography class which has got me really comfortable with this camera. I highly recommend that all folks like myself that are new to DSLR cameras and the functions should do this. I know that I am getting so much more out of the creative control functions because I did. I hardly use the auto setting any more. Now it is easy to use, and takes great pictures. I do wish it had a dedicated ISO button. I have assigned the FN button to control the ISO. The kit lens that came with the camera seems to be doing a good job. I bought the 55-200 lens refurbished from the Nikon website. That also works great. I use both lenses regularly. I am so very happy with this camera and the lenses. May 28, 2014
Nice for the price Very good images. Easy to use. Easy to access most shooting modes from the back panel. The swivel screen is a must have for self portraits and video. Wish it had 5 exposure bracketing instead of 3 brackets. I really like its small size and light weight. My particular camera has picture control settings that I have to custom set to get decent results. For what you can get this camera for now as a refurbished model $350 currently on Nikon Store..... its a deal that can not be beat anywhere in photographic bang for the buck. Rock on my brothers... if your looking for a rock solid DSLR on a budget look no further. May 16, 2014

As a reflex camera each shot is a mirror flip. Because this is a mechanical part after several thousand times it would fail, maybe around 100K.

Answer:
What do you mean by maximum shots? Maximum resolution shots, maximum continious shots or number of shots that can you take before memory card is full? If you're talking about the card shots, than it all depends on card capacity(size) Bigger is better!

Answer:
Depends on what you want to do, but I would recommend at least three:
1. A wide angle. The 18-55mm normally is just fine, but you can go for the 10-24mm.
2. A telephoto. The 55-200mm or 55-300mm VR. Just go for one.
3. A fast fixed focal length lens. I recommend the 50mm f1.8G.

Because I like macro photography, in addition to the above, I have a micro 40mm.

Answer:
The 5100 has a flip out LCD, so there is no need for a monitor cover. Instead, just flip out the LCD, rotate it, and flip it back in.

There are third party sites that make "screen protectors" which are thin films designed to protect the LCD from scratching. I don't know how effective or useful they are since the glass or plastic used to protect the Nikon LCDs varies from year to year and model to model. For instance, my Nikon D3 and my GF's Nikon D5000 doesn't have a scratch, neither have had monitor covers or screen protectors.

Hoep this helps,

I am considering purchasing the D5100. Can I change the aperature and iso settings with this camera? My current camera I cannot change the settings. I really want to get blurred backgrounds on my pictures. Which lenses are good for that? Is this camera good for beginners using a DSLR? Any comments/reviews on the camera and lenses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

USA warranty honored in other countries?

Answer ID 9677 | Published 04/07/2004 12:28 PM | Updated 02/15/2011 11:07 AM

Is the Nikon USA warranty valid outside the United States?

The Nikon USA warranty on film cameras, lenses, and speedlights will be honored by Nikon-authorized service centers outside the United States as long as you have the yellow copy of the Nikon USA warranty and your sales receipt from a dealer in the USA. The key to the validity of the warranty is a sales receipt from the country in which you purchased the equipment. If you purchase equipment in another country where the Nikon Worldwide Warranty applies, copies of the sales receipt and this warranty are necessary to obtain warranty service in the USA. Buying the equipment with a Nikon Worldwide Warranty in the United States is not recommended because that warranty is not valid in the USA without a sales receipt from an overseas dealer, and it is not valid outside the USA with a sales receipt from a dealer in the USA.

Note that USA products usually include have blank warranty cards with the camera company's USA addresses on them. Gray Nikon cameras and lenses used to come with international warranty papers, and lately the stores selling gray are just pulling all the warranty documents out of the boxes.

In other words, be careful, and know your dealer.

Answer:
The 18-55 and 55-200 are good starter lenses. Between them you can shoot a lot of different situations. They are not fast primes, but are decent zooms. I started with these two lenses with my D40, then eventually added the 35mm 1.8, 70-300VR, and 18-105VR, so I rarely use the 18-55 or 55-200 these days.

Answer:
I assume it says AF-s not AF, Not quite sure what you mean by" but do not work", make sure M/A switch is on "A", lens is mounted correctly, set the camera mode to auto and it will basically do the
rest.

There is no dedicated ISO button on the D5100. You change ISO either in the Custom Settings d2 menu or from the Information screen.

Answer:
Hi
I would say 50mm for portrait lens...why...if u buy FX version for DX camera, it is close to 70mm which is considered by most to be a great portrait focal length, as it is very close to what the human eye sees, i.e.: no real distortion, a good working distance from model...
I own 105mm VR 2.8 and shooting portraits as a prime lens is tack sharp always, but i need to get back from model too far... and if you can afford the f/1.4, the more expensive the sharper and more durable it will be...and you can have an awesome macro lens as well if you choose that version...

As for flash, if you can afford the 910, I would buy it... why, because it will do more than any other lens and will last a lifetime, you can use it on this camera and many to come in the future...the new flashes are incredibly versatile...if you cant afford that model, then the SB700 is great as well, would do all you want for now I believe...

Hope this helps

Answer:
You can get a million different answers for the best portrait lens, it depends on what type of portraits you are shooting. If you don't want to spend alot of money wait for the new AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G. It will have an effective focal length of 127mm, not too close and not too far. If you don't mind spending money then get the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. Just my opinions others will differ.

Answer:
You will need Camera Control Pro 2, using the included USB, in order to operate your camera remotely and capture unique images directly into your computer. If you want to use an external monitor you will need to get in contact with the manufacture of the third party equipment for compatibility and support information with our products.

Answer:
The D5100 doesn't have the panorama scene mode (you will need a software in order to stich the images). However, it does have the interval timer photography feature.

Answer:
The Framing Grid is only available in Live View. See page 48 (not 78!) of the User Manual, or page 103 of the Reference Manual. Note that the Framing Grid cuts the screen into quarters, not thirds.
