The EH-5a is an optional AC Adapter for select Nikon DSLR cameras that can be used to power the camera from a wall outlet.
For D3100/D3200/D5000/D5100: Requires EP-5A Power Connector (available separately)
Can be used world-wide with optional plug adapters.

*Aside from differences in size and weight, the EH-5 and EH-5a are different in the regard that the EH-5 is not in compliance with the State of California's new Appliance Efficiency Regulations. The EH-5a meets these standards.

The EH-5A is an AC Adapter that can power select Nikon cameras from an AC power source, useful when shooting long sessions.

Specific cameras require the use of the EP05, EP-5a or EP-5B Power Supply Connectors for use. Supply Connectors sold separately.

EH-5a AC Adapter 5 5 1 1
Absolutely indispensible!!!! If you tether your Nikon DSLR this AC adapter is absolutely necessary! A constant USB connection will eat your batteries for a snack quickly! A real must have for studio work. Some shooters complain that this item is too pricey. Considering that laptop power supplies cost more I don't think the price is very far out of range if at all. Answer:
D700 has a female DC-in socket on the side. EH-5a directly plugs into this socket and powers the camera. You *don't* need to have battery present in the battery compartment.to operate the D700 with the EH-5a adapter. You need a dummy battery adapter in the battery compartment on cameras that lack a DC-in socket. For example D5100 and D3100 don't have the DC-in socket and require the dummy battery adapter (EP-5a). In such cameras, EH-5a plugs into the EP-5a cable to power the camera.

Answer:
I have a D700. Do you mean to say that I need a special Dummy battery to use the EH-5a? I have never heard of this in any of the product literature. What does the dummy battery do?

If you are referring to the D700. You can use the AC/Adapter EH-5a and EH-5. There's no need to use the EP-5 Power Supply Connector.

Answer:
I had the same question and did extensive research. From the information I got from a lot of calls to a lot of places, Nikon pretty much has the EH-5a on hold in manufacturing, but it WILL 100% be available at some point, most likely fairly soon. Most places you see that have this item in their catalogue say that it is back-ordered from the manufacturer, which means they will be available to purchase soon.
