Great flash, controls not intuitive
Flash works as advertised, and though it doesn't do all the tricks that it's big brother does, still very versatile flash system. I find the controls at times frustrating to use. I will bring my manual as the controls often require multiple buttons to be used at the same time to make changes. This is confusing and takes time away from getting the picture.

Good multidirectional flash
I use the SB600 with my D40 mostly for fill indoors and out, though I occasionally use it as a remote slave controlled by a borrowed SB800.
I like the SB600 over the SB800 because it is lighter and it has fewer functions that I need to learn how to work around to get to the functions I actually use. My only criticism is the same I have for the SB800- the controls on the back are too complicated. It would be fine to add a few more buttons to simplify the most used features by most users.

A diffuser dome cannot be use in the SB-600, because of the way the head is design.

You can mount the SU-800 Commander on the camera hot shoe to use the speedlight wirelessly.Answer:
Unfortunately the D3000 does not support in camera cls, the only way to do it would be to purchase either an off camera cors such as the SC-28 / 29 or third party wirless triggers. Alas the SB-600 does not have SU-4 mode so this cant be used either although you can purchase the SU-4 adaptor to place under the flash. All these options are unable to support i-ttl so in all cases you will have to set your flash manually.
The SB-600 flash automatically adjusts the zoom of the flash to match the focal length of the lens. Does it take into account the cropping factor for DSLRs with APS sensors instead of full-frame sensors, like the D5000? In other words, when the lens is at 50 mm, the effective focal length is really 75 mm. Does the SB-600 zoom to 50 mm or 75 mm?

I can attest that the SB600 will give outstanding results with the DX series of lenses. You don't have to worry, it'll make the adjustments that are necessary (unless you're shooting in manual, then it's up to you of course) to give you outstanding results. Mount it on your D5000 and shoot until the batteries die! Have fun with it.Apr 14, 2011 by

Answer:
The focal length will be the same, 50mm will always be 50mm regardless of what camera its is on and so the flash will recognise that focal length as being 50mm.The zoom range of the 600 is 24-85mm which expands to 14mm with the built in wide adaptor.

I do believe so, and you don't need the socket; these flashes are so sophisticated they'll work directly with your transceiver.May 5, 2011 by
