Nikon never fails to deliver I've been using the SB600 for almost a month now. Bought it brand new. I love it! very easy to understand and use. It works great thru TTL and TTL BL April 21, 2011
good product but... A very good flash but definitely wish the battery life was better. April 19, 2011
excellent flash This is my entry flash as far as a off the camera ttl flash. I have used other flashes for over 30 years and this is the first unit that made me want to learn more about flash. I love the Nikon system that lets me use the flash wireless and gives me so many more options as far as lighting. I would guess that the 800 and 900 offer many advantages, but as a new digital shooter, it has been a great flash to get started. Out of the box, 5 min after buying it, I shot a great photo of a bird in flight at night and I loved the image so much, I thought "that's it, paid for itself already" April 19, 2011
Great all around flash For the price a great value. Works great with Nikon cameras (D50 & D90). Well lit and natural looking subjects for a flash. April 16, 2011
Very nice flash, quality problem Pros: Very nice with a lot of options. Long battery life with 4 AA's. Con: Had to send it in for warranty repair of the internal motor after about only 10 months' use. April 14, 2011
Great Lighting with eaze I was really impressed with the way this flash made my photos sharper with detail. And I love using it off camera also. It is a awesome flash and it is to bad that Nikon is not making any more sb600. I definitely want another. It is easy to use. April 14, 2011
Great flash! I use this flash on my D3100, and I love it! I hate the way the pop up flash makes my photos look. This flash allows me to bounce the flash off the ceiling and walls, allowing for more subtle lighting. My camera doesnt' support off camera flash via the camera itself, so I can't comment on how that works. There is a way around this though, you can buy flash triggers. But in doing so you can't use ttl, you'll have to use the flash in manual mode. But it is a way to get the flash off the camera. Ok enough about that, let me talk about my experiences with it. I love using the bounce flash to expose my target. You'll notice a much softer and less harsh light whe doing so. Depending on the angle you can get some decent shadowing and light contrast, so experiment! One thing to consider...the light will pick up the color of what you're bouncing it off of, so keep that in mind. I'm a total beginner at lighting so this is all i can offer to you so far. I absolutely love the way this flash illuminates my targets, it's far superior to the pop up flash. So if you can find one of these flashes for a decent price, pick it up! I do believe it's been discontinued, but it's still a wonderful flash unit. Get one if you can, it's affordable and works great! April 14, 2011
Great Flash Great affordable flash. I am new to serious photography and look for affordable but quality products. This flash works great. The swivel head gives me all the capability I need. There are plenty of flash settings for the serious hobby photographer and I have even used it to help shoot a wedding for a professional who used the same flash. If you use good batteries, the flash recycle time is very quick. April 14, 2011
Wonderful light My flash is wonderful, the light is always spot on. Using the CLS system is a joy! April 14, 2011
Easy to use, excellent features This unit is one of those produced and will never return, so sad to hear is gone. Easy to pack, to install and use. Connected to a D5000, picture results are exceptional. Powerfull and super fast for multiple shooting. April 8, 2011
Prematurely discontinued: it's great! Get one! This flash is excellent in all aspects, a great bang for the buck, and was prematurely discontinued mainly because it is the expensive SB700's toughest concurrent. Hopefully by the time that you read this you can still find SB600s it stock if you browse around - I did, and I'm glad I got one! Seriously, it is really powerful, fast, handles several consecutive shots at ease, and works in wireless CLS mode with TTL perfection when commanded by my D7000's internal flash. Much easier to use than the huge and expensive SB700, and a big step above the built in units: CLS will allow you to take pictures that look like studio, while using a single SB600 handheld. No large stuff to carry around. By the way, I strongly recommend the SG-31R IR Panel to covert your camera's built-in flash unit while in CLS mode - unless you use a SU800 instead of the camera's built in flash to control the other flahes. The Nikon SB600 flash is one of those rare occasions when you find a truly excellent product for a bargain of a price. Get it while you can! February 5, 2011
great speedlight i used this speedlight with my nikon D40 to shoot the models at the carshows, i did use a soft filter that i bought at Samy's camera but even without it the flash worked great, it gave me just the right amount of control and light for different subjects, i mainly used it on people however, the photos came out fantastic! December 30, 2010
Good bang for the buck I purchased my sb600 to use primarily as a slave. The menu is a little quirky, but after I had it set up as a slave, that is where it stays. Using it as a remote with CLS is great because I can control it from my camera and I don't have to fiddle with on-flash settings. It has never let me down. I just have to pay attention to the settings. December 26, 2010
Awesome Flash This is such a cool flash. It is just right for my Nikon D5000. It works like a charm. Thank you, Nikon, for coming up with this flash. December 25, 2010
awesome right out of the box I am a very amateur photographer but even I can see just how much difference this flash has made with my D5000. It has changed my camera from a really nice camera into a "don't have to pay someone else for professional looking baby and Christmas photos" kind of camera. The best part about the flash is knowing that it will still be the flash that I am using when I am better than amateur. Pay the little bit extra for this flash. You won't regret it. December 24, 2010
Almost Perfect For a novice or casual shooter, this flash is great. It doesn't have all the fancy features that only the pros use, yet it shoots like one. Small, lightweight and powerful, all you have to do is put it on the camera and shoot. It even works off camera as a remote flash, that is if your camera is compatible. The biggest gripe I have is that the flash head does not rotate 180 to the right. Come on Nikon, you can rotate it 180 to the right, why not the left. If you must limit one side, limit the left. This would be so much better when using a vertical grip if the limitations were reversed. Other than that I have no complaints. I'm thinking of getting a few more for a super portable, studio-like lighting system. December 17, 2010
SB-600 is an Excellent Cost Effective Flash I've seen a few postings at various sites calling the SB-600 old and outdated. Bull! Yes, it does not have all the features of the SB-900, but since I am not in need of the advanced bells and whistles, the SB-600 more than does the job, and for about $287 less than the $512 SB-900. There is only ONE thing in my opinion that would add to this flash, and that is a Sub-Flash, a smaller flash on front that would add fill-in when using bounce flash. (A few aftermarket flashes offer this feature). And hey - even the SB-900 does not have that. But, you can always tilt the flash up only a bit for bounce flash, and add a diffuser (not included) if need be, to help add some front fill. The SB-600 is quite powerful, is not very much of a battery hog, and is VERY user friendly, contrary to a posting I viewed on a (unnamed) large New York City camera retail site. Do not be concerned that this flash is sometimes called 'outdated'. For the money (typically around $225 at a local camera shop) it is quite a fine unit. My advice is if you don't NEED the advanced pro-features of the SB-900, get the SB-600 as this flash is perfect for most amateur, and some advanced amateur, needs. You may also want to check out the newer, similar and slightly higher cost (~$329) SB-700 that has only a few more features. I am using the SB-600 on a Nikon D300s camera and have yet to obtain a less than excellent photo. December 16, 2010
GREAT It can also be use in concerts (music instuments) it is great for any not theat well lighted area. FABOULUS. January 21, 2011
Not Reliable When it worked, this speed light was fine. However, I recently sent it back to Nikon for repair for a THIRD time for the same issue. It will charge, but not fire, either attached to the hot shoe, or manually. This is just not acceptable. November 18, 2010
The Standard Flash The SB600 is a great performing flash. Fast recycle times and easy operation make it great to use in the field. It always seems to have plenty of power, even in bright sunlight. My only criticism is the lack of any kind of sync port, I use a small hot shoe adapter to fix this though. I've used the CLS with these and they work great with my D300s commanding them. Recently though I've been big on going manual and tend to use them with radio slaves, which they work with very well. November 16, 2010
Small and easy to use I bought a couple of these to have as extra lights when doing location work. They are small and easy to set up. For wedding work or portraits, you can't go wrong with this unit and it's cost effective. Excellent power, even light and wireless. November 12, 2010
It is AMAZING This flash is amazing. You can bounce it off windows to get a cool look. It is great for sports like basketball (gyms are not usaly that well lighted.) any other sport on a cloudy day. This flash is Relly worth the price. I would Relly reccomend this to a freind December 2, 2010
Handy flash Its a excellent flash for its price. Works perfect in a D90 camera body or like a wireless remote unit. I strongly recommend to use a diffuser to get the light a little bit soft, otherwise you wont catch a good skin tone. Bouncing the light to archive that is a very good solution... Recycling power its not the main quality, but it is not a "drain" battery unit. You can have nice results if properly used with the correct metering mode (center or spot). Only thing I really miss in the head´s unit is a "built-in" white card, it would be great. If you are a serious hobbyist and you concern about light quality, and want to save some cash, this is the right flash for you. October 4, 2010
Great first flash. I just got this flash and immediately see an improvement in my portraits. It is my first flash for my D5000 and it works extremely well. I wish that the D5000 could take full advantage of the CLS, but a cord works just as well. I have yet to try in on the Football field or Basketball court, but I'm excited to get out and shoot. It has put new energy into my photos. I love the bounce capabilities and the 14mm diffuser works great with my AF-S 18-200mm lens. A great investment. August 25, 2010
Great little flash I have three of these and really enjoy using them. Matched with a Nikon DSLR with commander mode the uses are endless. Saves from having to drag my Strobelites everywhere. Versatile, not very expensive and compact. I use mine alot. Great flash for very little money. All three of my SB600's have been very reliable. They've all been workhorses. August 3, 2010
entry level good starter speedlight works well off camera with the sb900 easy to setup on a umbrella stnd August 2, 2010
Quality, but not ease of use. I bought this flash to enable me to take advantage of Nikon's CLS with my D90, but find the menu system is too arcane for my use. Perhaps if you are very adept with this type of system you'll love the ability to add light at a low cost, for my taste I prefer either the simplicity of the SB-400 or the more capable and simpler to use SB-900. August 1, 2010
Versatile for general use, goes well with D5000 I've had this flash for 5 years now, and it constantly surprises me at how effectively it covers the basic needs. It's only a 4xAA battery unit, so it won't light up a stadium, but it's certainly adequate out to 40 ft. I like the zoom head which automatically follows the lens zooming position, and the fact that the head can be rotated as well as tilted. Even without the flip down front defuser, it covers a 10mm lens quite well. I find it easy to use in day-time flash fill situations, and it is very easy to move up or down in 1/3 exposure steps. I like the taller position it has compared to some of the smaller flash units, as it really helps prevent red-eye issues. It recycles reasonably quickly, and goes a loooong way on a fresh set of batteries. August 1, 2010
Great Flash if it would keep working I have used the SB-600 for 3 years on an older D50 body. Flash performance and versatility have been great, but now the LCD panel flashes and will not auto zoom. Not the reliability I have come to expect from Nikon since I first owned and EM nearly 30 years ago. July 27, 2010
Superb features and a great value. I believe SB-600 is surprisingly versatile for the cost of the unit. The SB-600 has been used for remote photo shots, large groups and family photos. Its performance has amazing breath and depth! Purchased another brand that made "wild" claims of performance, returned it. The SB-600 has performed in a superior manner, above my demanding expectations. July 20, 2010

Answer:
Unfortunately the D3000 does not support in camera cls, the only way to do it would be to purchase either an off camera cors such as the SC-28 / 29 or third party wirless triggers. Alas the SB-600 does not have SU-4 mode so this cant be used either although you can purchase the SU-4 adaptor to place under the flash. All these options are unable to support i-ttl so in all cases you will have to set your flash manually.

SB-600 flash auto zoom with D5000

The SB-600 flash automatically adjusts the zoom of the flash to match the focal length of the lens. Does it take into account the cropping factor for DSLRs with APS sensors instead of full-frame sensors, like the D5000? In other words, when the lens is at 50 mm, the effective focal length is really 75 mm. Does the SB-600 zoom to 50 mm or 75 mm?

Answer:
I can attest that the SB600 will give outstanding results with the DX series of lenses. You don't have to worry, it'll make the adjustments that are necessary (unless you're shooting in manual, then it's up to you of course) to give you outstanding results. Mount it on your D5000 and shoot until the batteries die! Have fun with it.

Answer:
The focal length will be the same, 50mm will always be 50mm regardless of what camera its is on and so the flash will recognise that focal length as being 50mm.
The zoom range of the 600 is 24-85mm which expands to 14mm with the built in wide adaptor.
