Great scanner. I scanned over 7000 34mm slides with this scanner and got great results. I wish Nikon would continue making this scanner. I am sure there is still a great demand for it. February 14, 2014
Fantastic. As good as the old drum scanners in the trade shops Love the quality of this scanner. Arguably as good as it gets. March 10, 2013
Nikon Coolscan produces truly magnificent scanned images. Really great scanner, I have a used Nikon scanners for years and truly regret not having purchased the 5000, I wish that Nikon would continue manufacturing this model or come up with a newer version surely record numbers would be sold. July 24, 2012
Can't beat it IMO When I was building my first custom PC system back in the early 1990's, I installed a Coolscan 2000 in one of the slots on my computer. For its time, it was good for what I needed it for. Finally, several years ago, I upgraded to the Super CoolScan 5000 ED. While it does not come with the ability to slide into my computer tower, it runs rings around what the 2000 was able to do. More capabilies, higher resolution, etc., made this buy (off eBay) one of the smartest things I have done. Even though I was shooting mostly digital at the time, I have more than two decades of b&w negative and Kodachrome film in my files. The scans from this scanner have prompted my return to film using a couple of rangefinder cameras. It is a shame that Nikon has gotten away from film scanners but I understand the reasons. I am noticing, however, that the amount of film being used by young and old photographers seems to be on the rise. Maybe, Nikon will reconsider their decision and reenter the film scanning market. August 9, 2011
Coolscan 5000 - Sad to See It Discontinued This was one of the best scanners for 35mm film and transparencies ever made. I have the Coolscan 4000 and bought a Coolscan 5000 before they became nearly impossible to find. After Nikon stopped making them, they were being sold on eBay for twice their list price. The other scanners now on the market don't even come close to the professional results one gets with the Coolscan 5000. Why Nikon discontinued this superior product is beyond my imagination. Just because digital has taken over the camera market does not mean photographers who shot slides and film for decades are just going to throw away all their images. I wish Nikon would wise up and come out with the next generation of film scanners. April 16, 2011

Answer:
The use of Nikon Scan software with Windows 7 (any version), any 64- bit operating system (including 64-bit, 32-bit or Compatibility mode) is not supported. We suggest trying a third party software option such as Vuescan from Hamrick.com or Silverfast software.

Occasionally have trouble getting the Super Coolscan to power on. Was scanning just fine last night. Today, though the device is plugged in properly, there is no response when I push the power button. Is this a common problem, or is there a hardware issue somehow?

The SA 21 unit seems "locked" in the scanner. I have powered down and up, reset computer, etc to no avail. Feels like there is a physical lock on. I have 3 of these scanners and this is the first time I have had to deal with this issue.

Unfortunately Nikon no longer makes or sells scanners . If you intend to buy the Super COOLSCAN 5000 ED and use it with Mac OS X 10.8, you will need a 3rd party software such as Vuescan or SilverFast.

Answer:
Nikon Scan, which is the software provided with COOLSCAN scanners, is not compatible with newer operating systems. However, there are some third-party software programs that will allow the COOLSCAN LS5000 to operate on Windows 7 or 8. While Nikon cannot offer support or advice on third party products, two programs that we are aware of that support COOLSCAN scanners on newer operating systems are Vuescan (www.hamrick.com) and Silverfast (www.silverfast.com).

System requirements for Nikon Scan can be found here: https://support.nikonusa.com/app/an...

The most recent versions of Nikon Scan can be downloaded from this address:
