Excellent Optics, Slow Scans, Software Needed I bought this scanner at least six years ago, and used it extensively with my WinXP computer. The hardware is slow and noisy, but can produce excellent images, given a great deal of tweaking. The Nikon software has a VERY steep learning curve, but is workable, and gets easier if you use it often. Additional image processing (ICE, etc) can add to LENGTHY scan time. With preview, tweaking, and final scan, some images (slides) were taking me 20 minutes total. Unfortunately (or maybe not) Nikon's scanning software does not support anything beyond WinXP. So I am about to purchase VueScan software, and will probably end up using it with the both my Nikon and flatbed scanners. Software issues aside, the Coolscan V ED can produce some very sharp scans of 35mm film and transparencies. Its mechanism, while somewhat whiney and grindingly slow, continues to work, and does output great results at 4000 dpi. I have been able to scan and improve (via both scanner and post-processing software) some fine restorations of very old, dirty, or faded images, and make huge enlargements. I'd recommend this machine to anyone looking for very high quality film scans, but not in a hurry. And willing to buy third-party scanning software. Also, the optional FH-3 "Strip Film Holder" comes in very handy for securing negative strips with issues such as curling, or torn sprocket holes. October 27, 2013
The Best $600 i've spent in a very long time!! i purchased my unit from B&H Photo about 5 years ago. i used it to scan the 1,000 or so family slides that i inherited....worked VERY well, except for the "clunky" Nikon software. i then delved into 35mm film scanning, again....solid performance, except for the software. originally running with OSX Tiger.....when i purchased a new iMac 27" with OSX Lion, not supported. so, i purchased VueScan...works great, much faster and have not seen a "quit unexpectedly" message since. i've made a little money on the side with mine, too. always nice to make a little back!! 5 star rating – excellent scanner – glad I purchased it. 5 star rating – excellent scanner – glad I purchased it. So far have scanned over 4000 slides & negatives Pros: Have had this scanner for over 3 years and it has performed well on 30-40 year old slides and negatives. Film types included 126, 110 and 35mm. Many scans come out better than the original. Does a great job on the small 110 slides in plastic mounts – must use a 35mm adapter. The Nikon software does a great job of improving old Kodachrome slides. Cons: 1- Scans are slow but remember all that it is doing – not only the scan but dust spec removal, etc. 2- The manual and help screens provide very little detail as to how to use the software… i.e. buttons are explained but they do a poor job of explaining how to use the software. Must learn by trial & error. Other: Nikon is missing the boat by not advocating for scanning 110 format slides and negatives. Even their telephone tech people didn’t think the scanner would work for 110 format. I took a chance and am very please with the outcome. The only issue is finding 110 adapters to fit the 35mm opening. In my case, I found a camera store with a box of 110 slide adapters. The plastic slides can be popped in & out of the adapter mounts quite easily thus a few adapters can be reused hundreds of times. I created an adapter for 110 negative strips to allow 2 to 6 frame 110 strips to be scanned. May 1, 2012
Nikon CoolScan 5000ED works well with my old PC ... but not with my new Mac... Have successfully used my Nikon CoolScan 5000ED for several years .. this with my Dell PC ... Recently made the change to Mac/MacBook Pro 10.6.8 operating system laptop & find that the Nikon CoolScan 5000ED is not compatible .. I invested in a 3rd party program ... Silverfast 8 by LaserSoft ...& to my disappointment the iSRD (ICE) in their program is not working ... LaserSoft has been most accommodating to get my problem resolved ... but no luck ... I get the message now that maybe my Nikon CoolScan 5000ED is the problem even though it works well with the Dell/PC ... Yes... I would recommend this Nikon Scanner but I sure wish that Nikon would support my current Mac computer... April 12, 2012
NICE PRODUCT I had one of this and scanned nearly 12000 slides and 6000 negatives, it worked flawless. I used it with VueScan, because it was faster than Nikon sofware (at least it was my perception). Results for slides are most than acceptable, with negatives things are a little more complicated due to the mask interference. Anyway images saved from scanner with VueScan needs some kind of reprocessing to enhance it. I sold when I finished scanning my slides and negatives. April 14, 2011

No. Nikon Scanners and NikonScan software have been out of production for over two years. The use of Nikon Scan software with Windows 7 (any version), Windows 8, or Mac OS 10.5.x or later, or any 64- bit operating system (including 64-bit, 32-bit or Compatibility mode) is not supported.

We suggest trying a third party software option such as Vuescan or Silverfast software.

Dear reader,

I use my Nikon COOLSCAN V ED (LS-50 ED) since several years under Windows XP now I bought a new laptop with Windows 8 but I can’t use the scanner because the USB connection cannot connect with the system (not recognised automatically). In addition, I cannot install the software, Nikon Scan, from the CD.

What can I do to make it work?

Best regards,

Mayer.

Answer:
Since Nikon is no longer producing film scanners we are no longer updating Nikon Scan software. If your MacBook is running a newer OS then you'd need to look into third party software. You can find a list of supported operating systems for Nikon Scan here:
https://support.nikonusa.com/app/an...

Additionally, the COOLSCAN V ED requires a built-in Firewire connection so your MacBook would need to support this kind of connection.

Hello,

I just purchased a secondhand Coolscan V that I am running with SilverFast 8 under Win7, and it works very well and pretty fast. The only annoying habit is that it automatically ejects the film slide after a few minutes of waiting—well, it just takes some time to get a precise white balance with all the cool features the software provides, and then it is very disturbing when right before the final scan the slide is being ejected and I have to repeat the index and preview scan. How can I turn this off or at least change the time interval? Any software or firmware for that?

Thank you,
Stefan

Answer:
It is not normal behavior for the slide to be automatically ejected in the way you describe. This may be a software issue - since you are using third party software to operate your scanner, please contact the support team for assistance. For further assistance with your scanner or slide adapter, please contact Nikon Switzerland for support: http://www.nikon.ch .

Hi folks

I just upgraded both my laptop and iMac OS to 10.9 (from 10.5 & 10.6) and I was well aware that the Coolscan sofware wouldn't work with the new Operating system. So I bought VueScan, which seems like a great product.

BUT, I have realized that the VueScan program doesn't do justice to my Fuji Color Slides that are mostly shot at night. This software increases the grain by about 20-30%, and I have tried many variations in advance and simple settings. If I spend 45 minuets on each scan with VueScan I can get it close to what the original Nikon software would for me in under 3 minutes. I even contacted the developer of VueScan, who was somewhat helpful, but didn't understand my main issue. Which is the increased grain and the high amount of Gain.

It seems that even though the Nikon Scan software 4.0.2 looked simple, it did a great job recognizing the profile of the Fuji Provial film (both 400X & 100F) and the overall dark areas were recognized in a balanced manner with Nikon's original software. So I NEED to go back to the Nikon software.

One solution is that I buy a used Mac Mini and use my iMac as a monitor (via thunderbolt cable, is this possible?), and install OS 10.4 or 1.5 on the Mac Mini and then install the Nikon software CD.

*** What Mac Mini do you think is suitable for this? Which generation? what minimum RAM do I need ? do I need to worry about what kind of processor exists in the Mac mini? I will be using this set up ONLY for scanning and not other programs.

The odd thing is that Nikon's site says 10.4 is the last OS that the Coolscan works with. But, I used it with 10.5 for a few years, with only a few crashes but not more than 10-15 instances. Should I just stick with 10.4?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thank in advance

Answer:
The last Mac OS to be officially be supported by Nikon Scan software is Mac 10.4.11 which is compatible with Nikon Scan 4.0.2. While Nikon Scan may work on some later Mac operating systems, no changes were made to the software to make it officially compatible so performance can be unreliable.

Since COOLSCAN scanners have been out of production for several years, Nikon has not updated Nikon Scan software for Windows 7.
