Great little camera
Sure, some aspects of the camera could be improved, like the screen resolution, but value for your dollar this gem can't be beat. I have a D700, but find this the "go to" camera for hiking and casual photography. Considering the body costs less than most lenses, it's a must have accessory.

Outstanding
Since purchasing the D5000, have had no problems with it at all. Had to refer to the iunsruction book only once, so far. Not one to follow directions. Worked with two FM-2's for years at race tracks. Broke into the digital wonderland a couple of years ago and kick myself for holding out so long. Retired, now, and limit myself to local events and rodeo. Having a great time with it.

Nice Product, excelent Features
So far, this camera has proven to be on top of other devices I have used in the past.
There are very nice features within it, like the option to form a new picture from 2 others, editing and retouching pics directly from the camera and the pre-programmed modes which makes your life easy to take every day photos.
Still, it is very powerful and can be used as a PRO camera, using your knowledge and expertise to manually control every single aspect of each picture.

The D5000 continues to impress...
When I picked up the D5000, I already had the D90. What attracted me to the D5000 was the fact that it was in a D40 type of body (read "size" here) and the fact that it had an articulating LCD.
After getting the D5000 I came to really enjoy this camera. In fact, if you ever have used the live view mode (regardless of camera), you would agree that having an articulating (movable) LCD, really makes a difference. Liveview and movable LCD's are made for each other, that's for sure.
IQ-wise, the D5000 is on par with the D90 - that is rich, dynamic colors and superb high ISO capabilities. I keep the wonderful Nikkor 16-85 VR on mine and mannnnn, what a combination.
So if you love to take high def videos, or if you want to use the live view function more often, then get the D5000 as it will cure many of your ills. It's a shame that not more DSLR's don't have an articulating LCD.
I'm thoroughly enjoying my D5000 and regardless of what Nikon comes out with in the future, I'm keeping mine in my collection - it's that good!

Great Camera for its Price
This is an awesome camera in its class for the following reasons:
1. Very easy to use even for someone using a DSLR for the first time
2. Not as expensive as some of its competitor brands
3. Lot of features that cameras in the same range do not have
4. Easier to hold than the primary competitor product.

This camera is my new hobby and my new baby...
I bought this camera last Christmas. It's really good and superb in it's quality for photos. I took this unit to the highest mountain community peak in Canada and wow...my friends said the output looks like a postcard or from a calendar. I had the shots developed in prints and it's really good photo quality. Taking pictures is just my hobby since I was young but with this camera,I want to pursue further..it's worth the money I spent...I remember I had to keep coming back from the store and watch for this unit for price to go down and I really got an awesome deal for the holidays and I got the store's last unit available before their closing time. Truly great!

The D5000 exceeds many standards
As it is my first DSLR, I don't have very much to compare to, but I must say that this camera has it all. Whether you're a beginner or professional, it's easy to use and it has endless features making it a truly dynamic camera. The image quality is superb (given that the proper settings are adjusted correctly), the D-Movie feature is a nice plus, but I must say that the built in microphone is less than great, if you're into cinematography I suggest getting an external microphone for spoken dialogues, etc. Overall, this camera is well worth the money and worth purchasing for intermediate to professional photography purposes.

Amazing for Amateur, Cool for Pros
the first day i have loved pictures, is the day i need a DSLR camera..i looked into canon 500d and even imagined using it..but when i came to a point of really buying one, i need to search and compare..the moment i hold on to D5000, its really what i want..looking into its specs, its powerful..12.3 megapixels is the standard pixels the pros are using..the movie mode is a plus and the vari-angle that would help you shoot images..it has 19 total presets that you wont see in canon 500d..the difference is that, the canon's best seller has 15.1 megapixels but it doesnt matter because its too small difference..maybe the the dots of the lcd would matter..but hey the shooting speed of nikon d5000 is faster than that of the canon 500d..one more thing, you can edit pictures right into the camera which the canon doesnt have!the output of the camera is really far competitive than what you think..you wouldnt imagine you are amateur using the camera..

Exceeds my expectations
I got my Nikon this Christmas and I was so excited. This is my first DSLR and I am really impressed with it. It was extremely simple to use right away, so I could immediately begin taking pictures. After I read the manual and spent some time experimenting with settings, I've dug deeper into the many, very useful features and settings. I recently went on a trip to Australia and everyone was so impressed by my camera and once they saw the pictures, they were even more impressed. A feature that I love is the amazing HD video. It comes out in such great quality. I also purchased a larger lens (70-300 mm from Nikon) and I was originally nervous that it would weigh down my camera. Well that was not the case, it's still easy to use. The VR (vibration reduction) helps so much in getting a good shot. I love my Nikon D5000.

I love this camera. It takes brilliant photos.
I bought this camera over a month ago. I have been waiting for a long time to get it. I absolutely love it. It takes brilliant photos. I have had many comments on how crisp and amazing the photos are. It is relatively easy to use and wouldn't trade if for anything else.

Just what I needed!
For a person who is about to purchase his first SLR, I invested a lot of time researching what SLR will suit me. Though I love photography, I'm no pro. I'm just an ordinary person who just happens to have an "eye" for things. Along came the D5000. I held the camera on my hand, and tried shooting. This is it. This is just what I need. An SLR fit for amateurs and also appeal to pros. It is very easy to use and the megapixels are so effective. Some of my shots made me look like a pro. The full HD video is just a plus for me, and what made this shine is the swivel LCD. I always get to shoot without having to lie on floor. To sum it all up, the D5000 is a gem. Perfect for newbies and pros alike.

Excellent little camera!
I purchased this wonderful DSLR about two weeks ago, as I needed to upgrade from my Nikon D40 DSLR, which I bought about two years ago. (However, I still plan to keep my D40 as a backup camera.)
The D5000 is an incredible DSLR from Nikon. I use it to take a variety of photographs, ranging from kids to wildlife and flowers to landscapes. I found for all these demanding situations, the D5000 is an excellent companion. It is easy to use, lightweight, and delivers outstanding images. Mostly I use the Programmed Auto mode, which allows me to change the aperture and shutter speed according to my preference (flexible program mode), and I find it extremely easy to use. I like the live view feature, but most of the time I use the optical view finder, which is very good.
This is just a very brief review of my D5000. There are a lot more excellent features packed in this great camera. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this camera. I highly recommend it.

Answer:
The camera has a close-up scene mode, but for extremely close focus you will need to use a Macro lens. Nikon's macro lenses are called Micro-NIKKOR lenses and most of them will let you get so close that you can photograph objects at life-size. One thing to note about the Nikons staff answer. They are giving the approved list of SD cards able to be used on the D5000. This does not mean that other SD cards cannot be used. Sandisk recommends the 32gb Extreme SDHD which is not on the Nikon list. As far as I know, other SDHC card should work on the D5000, though it is always a case that you should find out as much about the product before you buy. I would first check your firmware first, even if it doesn't work it won't do any harm.Answer:

Since it has an F mount it can be attach to your camera. However, not all lenses can be used with a teleconverter. In general wide angle lenses or wide angle zoom lenses cannot be used. Also, lenses with relatively slow maximum apertures (slower than f2.8) cannot be used with teleconverters.Answer:
Unfortunatley the answer is no, no tc's will fit on this lens.

Answer:
What you need to do to achieve Bokeh in your images is use the maximum aperture on your camera's lens. Lenses that have f/stops of f/2.8 or wider (f/2, f/1.8, f/1.4) are ideal for use with this technique. With the aperture wide open, you can also increase the distance between your subject and the background to make it go out of focus more.To choose the aperture you want (wide open) use the camera in manual mode - where you will have to manually set the aperture and shutter speed, or aperture priority, where you set the aperture and the camera chooses the shutter speed.
Depending upon how much light is in the scene, you may also have to alter your ISO to be able to achieve the widest f/stop.
Answer:
Bokeh effect is nothing but the blurred part of the out-of-focus image. This effect is normally seen in the photography mostly around the light sources. This effect helps to focus on the object while making the background visually appealing.

Turn the mode dial from whatever you have it on to the icon that looks like a lightning bolt with an arrow but crossed out. Then flash won't pop up. But if the flash pops up the camera must think you need it, usually your pics will come out better when you listen to the camera when you are a starter.Jun 25, 2011 by

Yes- and I would recomend the 32 GB Extreme SDHC Cards. If you were getting a camera such as the D3s, I would recomend the pro one but the D5000 only shoots at 4fps so you don't need an extremely fast memory card. Just so you know the 32GB card will hold around 15 thousand photos on the D5000, I use an 8GB and its 3000 photo capacity is enough for me. Don't forget you can always dump it onto your computer!!Jun 25, 2011 by
