Excellent Camera I am a newbie in the world of photography. When i wanted to buy a camera, i bought me a Nikon D5000 from one of the owners recomendations. This is so far the best thing i have ever owned. Using this camera is so easy and it gave me excellent results. July 22, 2010
Great camera, easy to use. Takes good pictures. Good in camera editing. Very good all around camera. July 22, 2010
A great camera - especially at the price!!!! The D5000 is my 12th digital camera and my 4th Digital SLR. Hands down, the best camera I've ever owned including my complete Nikon SLR film system in "the old days". July 22, 2010
Excellent camera, easy to use, great results The D5000 is considerably lighter than the D70 it replaced. At the same time the feature-set has been expanded, and access to those features has been improved. The metering system is very accurate and photos require little, if any, post processing. I love the HD movie capability to augment the stories I want to tell. July 22, 2010
This is my first experience with Nikon and I am very pleased. The camera is easy to use and takes stunning pictures. The tilt screen is a great feature, as well as live view and HD movies. Excellent bang for the buck, cheaper then most cameras and loaded with more features. July 22, 2010
Wonderful I have loved taking pictures of family and our vacations as we've traveled...and my husband got me the Nikon D5000 for a Christmas/retirement gift. I have a learning curve for some of the advanced features, but the automatic, point and click feature is great, and even more is the SCENE selection. I use that a LOT for switching from close ups to landscape, night landscape, sunsets, dawns, etc. I would suggest some way of connecting the lens covers to the body of the camera so they don't get lost so easily but that is a small thing. The camera and all its functionality and quality are wonderful. I love it. July 22, 2010
love this camera. easy to use. pictures quality is the best July 22, 2010
Love the features. I purchased the body and the dx nikkor vr2 18x200mm lense. That way I don't have to change for the different shots. Great pics. I like to hunt and fish, can't wait to get it in the field. I reserched the other cameras and the d5000 won. Probably could have spent less money on a d3000, but I'm satisfied with my purchase. July 22, 2010
Amazed I picked up a D5000 part way through a term class in college 2010. I planned to have a quick learning curve, However, the very first night I took shots of the Moon and illuminated clouds that people are raving about. I enjoy the macro's settings so much that I have not even gotten into the settings for individual use. This camera has changed my life. I found many had to be printed in large sizes 12x16 for wall display. While I was getting pictures printed to larger sizes other folks at the counter could see my prints and asked me to shoot their wedding day. I declined, but that is how nice the shots from the D5000 appear on print. It made me appear professional. July 22, 2010
The D5000 is feature rich and good quality I feel the D5000 is an excellent value and I'm enjoying the pictures that I capture with it. It's well designed. The instructional DVDs are also very good. July 22, 2010
Great camera This is a great camera and takes fabulous pictures. I have only had it for a short time and I am very pleased. I can't wit to learn more and take more creative pics. I would absolutely recommend this camera! July 22, 2010
Easy to use great pictures Its very simple to use and get started, but as you use it you realise there is so much more to learn and capabilities to master. It allows you to grow and improve Takes great pictures July 22, 2010
The camera has everthing I was looking for Great camera everthing I was looking for. It works inside and out, low light or full sun. My main use is landscape and animals. I would recommand to family and friends. I was at Best Buy last week and sold a purchaser on the camera. I just was passing through the camera section and we discussed the D5000. I told him about the ways I used the camera and how I loved the results. The camera just abouts sells it self. July 22, 2010
Great camera, easy to use I went into the camera shop set on buying a canon t2i after reading online about how people like them. I talked to the guy at the shop and he suggested the nikon D5000 as it was a better value compared to canon and he was right! Not only did this camera cost less than the T2i, but it was easier to use! I am not a professional photographer by no means and this was my first DSLR camera. I have had no problems using the features on my D5000 and have had wonderful pictures! I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone who is just starting out using a DSLR and wants good quality, beautiful pictures. July 22, 2010
Great digital camera Easy to use, Great pictures, good prices and accesories July 22, 2010
D5000 is a very what a DSLR should be! I must say that I was recommended by a Professional Photographer to buy this camera and an extra lens. I have used it for a few months now, and am extremely satisfied with the ease of operation the more I use it. July 22, 2010
A Decent Starting DSLR..worth every penny paid for I find the D5000 an easy to use SLR and very handy though the only feature that i find dissapointing is that you cannot shoot more than 5 minutes of HD video on it even if you have a high capacity memory card in it...i hope that can change in the near future.,. July 22, 2010
Decent all around entry dslr for pro-sumer users. Pros: - Lots of features for your money - Relatively light - Great screen (indoor/outdoor) - Great DVD documentation for nubees - It's a Nikon! Cons: - Entry level lens...would prefer 18-200mm vrII to accompany camera body instead of two lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm) - A little slow in processing images to SD card...(SD is Class 6, 16GB purchased separately) - Low light level photography images are not very sharp and a bit grainy July 22, 2010
This camera is so easy to use! I bought my Nikon D5000 almost a year ago as I started my Photography Classes in the Fall. I love it. It is light yet full of features. The photos are awesome and the menus are so easy to understand. It has definintely delivered! July 22, 2010
Great camera This camera is a great value. It has all the scene settings and manual settings. I'm a beginner to photography and I like that I can be creative or just like the camera do the work. July 22, 2010
more than I had hoped for GREAT CAMERA Nikon you hit a home run with the D 5000! July 22, 2010
GREAT camera I had never owned my own camera and was not sure which level (or camera) to jump in with as my first time photographer, but after getting my D5000 and getting to play with and see some of the other models.... I am VERY HAPPY and pleased with my purchase. It is the BEST mix of Professional/Novice features and power in one device. July 22, 2010
This is a great product! My wife and I bought this camera to take pictures of our new baby. So far we have loved this camera. The features are great! Easy to use! I would recommend it to anyone. July 22, 2010
Great technical features, perfect size. My first digital SLR. Once aquainted with menus and options for exposure, speed, ISO, etc., I got the sense of full control over the pictures I could take. Impressive color and quality (details) under any lighting conditions. Interchangeable lenses offer unlimited flexibility. July 22, 2010
Love it! I've had this camera for a few months now and absolutely love it. The pictures are amazing. Camera is easy to use. We've used it from still closeups to action packed sports shots in a distance, great pics with all and in between. Really happy with the quality of the sports shots, both kids are in sports and we can finally get a great action shot of them. Only negative was the strap we had problems with it staying on, but that's minor we will just get a different one. Highly recommended, it's worth every cent. July 22, 2010
Overall the D5000 is a great camera. I originally bought the D5000 to use as a studio camera to photograph my paintings. It now has become my camera of choice when I travel. The images it produces are marvelous and the HD video I have made with it are equally excellent. My only complaint is that I occasionally need to refer to the (large..) instruction manual for specifics on certain features, but then this is a sophisticated machine. Needless to say one doesn't carry the manual with you at all times... I am quite pleased with the D5000 and have recommended it to many! July 22, 2010
Excellent Product for the semi-professional This is an excellent product for any avid photo enthusiast or semi-professional on a budget. I read reviews of this product and the D90 and came to realize that this product is as good as the D90 with only some minor usage exceptions. The core camera produces equivalent pictures. Ultimately, the quality of the camera from this level on up does not make the picture. It only provides additional capabilities (low light with action is a little more difficult with this camera than the FX format cameras). I would definitely recommend this camera as an excellent choice for a DX format camera and suggest you spend any price difference on some of Nikon's great lenses. At some time in the future I plan on buying an FX format camera, but I will always enjoy my D5000 and will expand my lens selection to enhance its capabilities. My lenses will then be capable of being used with the FX format camera when I make that purchase. July 22, 2010
Great results for entry level and serious enthusiasts; light to carry on long photo walks with a wide angle and zoom in the bag. The quality video capability is very handy. Not as good results in high ISO light conditions. July 22, 2010
A nice blend of advanced intuitive features. I bought the D5000 after my Nikon Coolpix 5700 was damaged. I had the 5700 repaired, but doubt I'll ever use it again. Want it? The D5000 is SO much easier to use and takes far better pictures. I love the intuitive nature of the camera and the ease of selecting the extensive "scene modes" ... this is absolutely wonderful! It came with two lenses ... I do wish I'd gotten the 70-300mm VR lens in place of the 55-200mm altho' I am not disappointed at all. Wonderful camera! July 22, 2010
A very good camera A very good camera. Live View is terribly slow. All program modes are usefull and easy to use. Built in flash is very good especially outdoors, even at distsnce. Battery life is excellent. Pick a Nikor lens for best results even though they are expensive. I have a 18-135mm which is a great lens, no stabilization. I think the 18-200mm would be best lens for this camera for all-round shooting, avoiding lens changes, but expensive at $600+. Video mode is of no use to me. I find the resolution a little annoying, there should be one more lowerr resolution than the highest. I find the best resolution to big for normal pictures, but the next resoluition down is not fine enough. Memory is cheap so use the highest resolutuion and resize on your PC as needed. July 22, 2010

Answer:
The camera has a close-up scene mode, but for extremely close focus you will need to use a Macro lens. Nikon's macro lenses are called Micro-NIKKOR lenses and most of them will let you get so close that you can photograph objects at life-size. To read more about Macro lenses, read this article: http://www.nikonusa.com/Learn-And-E....

Answer:
One thing to note about the Nikons staff answer. They are giving the approved list of SD cards able to be used on the D5000. This does not mean that other SD cards cannot be used. Sandisk recommends the 32gb Extreme SDHD which is not on the Nikon list. As far as I know, other SDHC card should work on the D5000, though it is always a case that you should find out as much about the product before you buy. I would first check your firmware first, even if it doesn't work it won't do any harm.

Answer:
Since it has an F mount it can be attach to your camera. However, not all lenses can be used with a teleconverter. In general wide angle lenses or wide angle zoom lenses cannot be used. Also, lenses with relatively slow maximum apertures (slower than f2.8) cannot be used with teleconverters.

Answer:
What you need to do to achieve Bokeh in your images is use the maximum aperture on your camera's lens. Lenses that have f/stops of f/2.8 or wider (f/2, f/1.8, f/1.4) are ideal for use with this technique. With the aperture wide open, you can also increase the distance between your subject and the background to make it go out of focus more.
To choose the aperture you want (wide open) use the camera in manual mode - where you will have to manually set the aperture and shutter speed, or aperture priority, where you set the aperture and the camera chooses the shutter speed.
Depending upon how much light is in the scene, you may also have to alter your ISO to be able to achieve the widest f/stop.

Answer:
Bokeh effect is nothing but the blurred part of the out-of-focus image. This effect is normally seen in the photography mostly around the light sources. This effect helps to focus on the object while making the background visually appealing.

I have a D3000 (similarly sized) and my case is a Hi-Pro DSLR Sling bag, it works very well. The zoom depends on what lens you have on it, but with the standard kit lens it has about 3x zoom.

yes - in full hd. but only 5 mins at a time (though you can of course make lots of 5 min videos). sound though is shockingly bad (i dont believe you can add a microphone either). just pop it in live view mode and hit the ok button. i would also put the lens into manual mode. the results are pretty good (not that i record a lot of video but it is handy and quality is great

Answer:
Turn the mode dial from whatever you have it on to the icon that looks like a lightning bolt with an arrow but crossed out. Then flash won't pop up. But if the flash pops up the camera must think you need it, usually your pics will come out better when you listen to the camera when you are a starter.

well, give the A program a try (aperture priority). :) most enthusiast or pro photographers don't use any other program besides M or A. or select one of the modes on the mode switch that shows no flash. (see your manual in that matter.)

Answer:
Yes- and I would recomend the 32 GB Extreme SDHC Cards. If you were getting a camera such as the D3s, I would recomend the pro one but the D5000 only shoots at 4fps so you don't need an extremely fast memory card. Just so you know the 32GB card will hold around 15 thousand photos on the D5000, I use an 8GB and its 3000 photo capacity is enough for me. Don't forget you can always dump it onto your computer!!
