Its a great camera that takes such clear pictures that some look like post cards! I love the fish eye pictures!

Only had it for a few hours and it worked flawlessly. Very easy to use and lightweight. The photos were clear and clean.

I have been passionate about photography for quite some time, describing myself as a high end amateur. I recommend this camera for any individual who enjoys photography, especially one whom is hoping to improve their skills. To assist with the many features, I did purchase an additional book that assists in explaining the camera features a little more thoroughly, and recommend that a first time user purchase some type of guide as well (I purchased David Busch's Nikon D5000 guide).

Great Camera, Easy to use, Get it.
This was my very first dslr camera and i was in love with it as soon as i took the first picture. Very Sharp quality photos, great zoom for everyday use. Gets the job done, plus some. I would recommend this camera to any person looking for a new hobby, or maybe even a pro just looking for something new.
Great Camera. Great Photos. Easy To Use. Get it!

This camera has been a nightmare, its been broke the entire time I have had it, I sent it to Nikon to have it repaired and it still has the same problem.

I bought this camera when I traveled to Oregon. I had a huge surprised with it. I took many pictures in rose garden - Oregon. Thank to Nikon, I have many beautiful pictures.

Purchased D5000 on Aug 1, 2010. Camera failed in November where the camera would not power on, even with fully charged batteries. Checked the serial number against the Service Advisory, but the serial number is out of range for the advisory. I've used Nikon products for a number of years without issue. To have a Nikon product fail like this is an issue. I would not recommend.

Excellent for landscape, Very poor for child/sport
Camera bought in Mar.2010 and at first I was so impresed with it. After I spent more time trying more and more I found out this camera is nothing else just a trouble. The 4 fps stopped working after a month, I sent to repair and they did great job in not even 2 weeks (paid just for shipping warranty cover repair) Camera is great for outdoor landscape and portrait as well. If you will try to catch quicky when kids start goofy games or they got just that lovely smile on their face the D5000 wont catch it. It’s always to late! Or if you get it it didn’t focus right so the picture is useless. I just upgrade to D7000 and put my D5000 up for sale. Difference is huge the D7000 is a Cadillac to Chevy no question ask. I would never buy D5000 and I just love D7000, now I’m able to catch every kids face smile and anything I want in no time - super fast!!!
I hope you think twice before purchase :)

Perfect point and click camera for Civil Air Patrol S&R. Use Nikor DX AF-S 55-200mm VR and A on. Tested at NESA 2009 Mission Scanner, 2010 Mission Observer. Anti vibration lenses negate plane vibration. 9 out of 10 shots have little or no vibration blurr.

Love the flip out display
This is an excellent camera. I love the flip out display. Thank you Nikon. Nikon got me hooked on adjustable displays with the excellent Coolpix 950's rotating body. I don't understand why an adjustable display isn't standard on most cameras. There are shots I get with the D5000 I could never get with conventional display cameras. I have 3 Nikon DSLRs. If the shooting situation is going to be unpredictable, especially if I might need to shoot over crowds, the D5000 is the one I grab first. If you can afford 2 DSLRs this should be one of them.

I have nothing negative to say about this camera, it's pretty much perfect for the price!, so many features and excellent Nikon quality. I actually think this has to be the best camera for money purchase ever.

Generally Foolproof for camera idiots like me.
I ave always used Nikon Cameras due their superior quality and precision results. I have taken numerous photography courses and have prolific library. I am still not comfortable figuring out the specific configurations for a specific photo opportunity. With my D-5000, I set it on Auto or a specific scene and click away. If there is a shot that needs work, the file contains enough data for elements to quickly bring out the vibrance of the subject. The true test is the compliments I get from those viewing my work. All relive all my memories when I revisit the photos. This is without a doubt, the easiest and most effective photo tool I have every had the pleasure to use.

Good starting point
It's very good to learn how to use digital SLR camera using this model.

Excellent camera with a lot of features especially the guidance within the camera.

The D5000 is absolutely perfect
From the day I got it, I started using it immediately. The battery life is AMAZING, the pictures are flawless, and the tunable screen is soooo useful. I would recommend this camera to anyone. unfortunately, the kit lens does not go that far so capturing far away pics is super hard with this lens, but you can always buy one so im not worried. I love this camera <3

Nikon # 4!!
If you are wanting to go from film to digital or point and shoot to a real digital SLR and you are on a budget..... Buy the D5000! The quality of this product and the pictures it takes are wonderful. This is my forth Nikon two film and 1 coolpix point and shoot this is the best one yet. I came back to Nikon because of product quality. I have not been disappointed. The only beef I have is the user's manual. It is fairly complicated but when you don't understand something go to the D5000 digitutor on this website. Within a very short time I was taking spectacular pictures. The Nikon website is a classroom in it's own right. If you are still wondering buy don't buy..... Let me help you BUY IT!

Great Camera to learn with
Iv been into photography for as long as I can remember and this is my first DSLR. I carry my camera with me every where and love it but the first thing that was apparent to me was how heavy my camera was compared to those of my friends. Now originally I didn't understand why, but after a few months of use and seeing what this camera can do compared to the base level DSLR's is incredible. It by no means is the best camera in the world but for what you pay for it its amazing. I will defiantly be buying something more advanced in the future but this camera gives you the chance to learn how a DSLR really works and how to use some of the advanced settings needed for professional photography while still allowing very easy almost point and shot convenience when needed. If you want to learn from knowing nothing to being an avid photographer this is the camera to get hands down.
P.S. Get the nikon photography school book on basics it will help you get started.

Unbeatable for the Price!
Very pleased with the features and picture quality of this camera. You can purchase more bells and whistles but this has the same sensor of more expensive models. And if good picture quality is what your looking for at a savings, this camera fits the tickets.

It's a NIKON, what else can you say. Nikon says it all!
November 12, 2010
I love my D5000. It is so easy to use and so much fun. The pictures ALWAYS come out fantastic. And the options available for different photo formats are incredible and fun to use as well. This was a great investment....although now I'm the official family photographer at every family BBQ. :-D
My "shared" photo shows how crisp the picture comes out while my cousin fishes on Kailua beach with his son. My other "shared" photo shows how I can control the camera so I can use the natural light to highlight my baby cousin and her awesome cuteness.

Black animated blotches on LCD playback
My D 5000 is the first DSLR i have bought. I am very excited about it. I am still learning to use it and I have taken some lovely pictures with it. The battery life is superb. My issues are
1. pictures are pale and the picture is not as vivid as I am used to although it is on vivid. Some of my friends little point and shoot cameras seem to take brighter and more vivid pics. The pics are generally soft and I have to use the Nex software to get them to 'my acceptable level'. I have noticed that when I take my pics and go to review them on the LCD, I notice animated black blotches. The pics are ok but the black blotches on the LCD is causing me some concern. Is there anything that can be done about the blotches. I usually print in P mode. The writing across the pic in the picture I uploaded is flashing in black during review on the LCD.

The perfect novice camera.
The Nikon D5000 is my very first D-SLR and I am amazed with it. It is incredibly easy to use with a simple menu and easy shortcuts to make each picture perfect. I also love how it has various autofocuses. I take many pictures of my dog and with the track autofocus even if he moves the picture comes out perfectly clear. I would recommend the Nikon D5000 to anyone because it takes great pictures and makes photography enjoyable.

I must admit from the moment I held the camera in my hands I knew it was for me. I had considered other models of Nikon but they felt bulky and heavy, and the D3000 felt much too small. I suppose I had a Goldie Lox moment and the D5000 was just right.
I take it out on trails with me all the time and couldn't ask for a better camera for nature photography, Even with the simple flash on the camera pictures come out wonderfully. Even nighttime pictures of people.
This is a wonderful camera, and I am proud to own it.

Shopping site needs more info....
I recently purchased a refurbished D5000. I should have called to get my questions answered in advance, but it would be nice if Nikon would post that the warranty is 90 days on refurbished items and that the return period is 14 days. In addition, nowhere did the site indicate what comes with the camera, i.e., lens, no lens? I assumed none based on price and was correct. My point, the site needs to describe precisely what is being sold. The camera I received looked good cosmetically although the mirror inside was dusty, there was some sticky goo in the battery compartment and the Info button on the back panel was sticky in its operation. I'd expect a higher level of attention to detail from the manufacturer's own reseller. I would not buy a refurb from Nikon again.

i would not recommend this one
my first DSL camera and it hasn't been very good. maybe because i'm a beginner, but my camera wouldn't focus correctly. it seemed like it might of been the lens, so i sent it out. it came back okay. so now i have the camera sent in, it's only 6 months old.!! maybe it'll come back great, time will tell.

I have owned my D5000 for about 7 months and I am still learning new things about it. I didn't want to get ahead of myself and write a review before I knew everything about this camera. It is my first D-SLR and I would strongly recommend anyone who is afraid to try a D-SLR not to be afraid of the D5000. It takes wonderful pictures in the many different scene modes and even in auto mode. However, do not be afraid to jump into the manual and semi-auto modes. They are very user friendly and fun to play with even if you aren't sure what you are doing. The video is very good quality and quite easy to use. Overall very reliable and a wonderful camera!

Good SLR Camera
This camera is easy to use, last long battery and it offers very good image quality. However auto focus on video mode is not for everyone. Over all it's a good SLR Camera for everyday use.
