D5000 I borrowed this camera from a friend to photograph a wedding and I fell in love with it! I went out the next day and bought one for myself. I'm currently a photography student, so I wanted a reliable camera for school. I've been using a D80 for the past 5 years and I figured it was time to upgrade before I leave. The D5000 takes phenomenal photographs, I used the 50-200 mm telephoto lens for a majority of the wedding. I only had to switch out the battery once, and that was after having it on and shooting for 9 hours. I haven't done much with the video yet, but I can't wait to try a few time-lapses here and there. July 11, 2013
Great D-SLR I am a happily retired senior and have been a 'serious amateur' photographer since the early 1950s. I have owned and shot many brands of 35mm SLR cameras and tons of 35mm film. I was slow and hesitant to switch from 35mm film to all digital and my Nikon D5000 is my second D-SLR that I have been shooting for ~ 4-5 yrs.. I've never had a problem with my D5000 and the D5000 recall was a minor inconvenience that Nikon corrected rapidly and efficiently and I have never had any problem with my D5000 before or after correction. My only criticism with the D5000 is no motor in the body and not all Nikkor lenses will AF, otherwise the D5000 is a wonderful camera, very user friendly, reliable and versatile. Just make sure you own/purchase lenses that have AF motors and will AF on the D5000 body OR purchase the Nikon D90 body which has an AF motor and will AF Nikkor lenses w/o AF motors. I would recommend the Nikon D5000... It's worked very well for me. July 4, 2013
Beautiful photos and simple to use I have had the camera since June of 2010. I originally bought it for a family vacation and battled between the Nikon and a comparable competitor. One of my friends suggested the Nikon D5000 and another had the competing camera which they offered to sell to me so that they could get the Nikon. After putting both cameras in a toe to toe comparison and the recommendations, I went with Nikon. I am glad I did because I love the photos I have taken with it and the camera has made a novice photographer look like a professional. I only came to this site because I was looking at the wi-fi adapter and seeing if it is compatible with my camera. Sadly it is not, but I am so pleased with my D5200 that I won't be upgrading anytime soon. January 20, 2013
Wonderful Camera I have had this camera few years and I love it! The picture quality is great. Its easy to use and I haven't had any problems with it. January 2, 2013
Funcionalidad al 100 Desde que compre mi nikon, nunca me ha fallado, su funcionalidad es excelente y permite tirar buenas fotos. June 29, 2012

I know that SD memory are capped at either 16 or 32GB. I see that I can get SDHC and SDXC cards up to 128GB. I take lots of pictures and videos of Kart Races (WKA/WKC).

Also is there a way of keeping the video stable (not jumping) when recording? I am using a tripod.

I've recently purchased a 50mm 1.8 nikkor lens for my camera, but found out that there isn't an AF motor in the lens. Of course, the lens works in manual, but with children it's nearly impossible to find a focal point quick enough. Which lens is the right lens?

Answer:
Check the memory card to make sure you have enough space for recording.HD video recording requires a lot of memory card space. The camera usually starts the recording countdown timer when you press the button to record. An unapproved memory card can cause video recording to stop unexpectedly. Make sure your are using an approved memory card that is class 6 or higher.
Please check the link below for the list of approved cards for the D5000.

I'd like take very close photographs (watch parts) and do not own a Macro lens for my D5000. A professional photographer recommended going with an extension tube as a less expensive option than a Macro lens. Will there be important differences in the kinds of images I can capture?

Answer:
If you need to get close often, then consider getting a true macro lens. You will find them of very high quality and much greater convenience. If the need to get close is rare, then tubes are fine.

Yes, extension will prevent infinity focus. 10 feet is out of range with the tubes attached. There are formulas you can use but I don't have them memorized.

DOF is always reduced with increased magnification. Lenses are optimized for the ranges at which they normally allow focus, but the image quality will still be acceptable.

You will also lose some light with the extension, making your focusing more difficult as you add more.

You will find a lot of good information in John Shaw's Closeups in Nature. Nevermind his focus on nature, the techniques are the same.

Answer:
My wife and I have two D5000s, they are wonderful cameras. I took some wonderful pictures of the moon with an 18-200 DX lens. Used a tripod, low ISO, remote and delayed shutter. But, it all depends upon how large you want to enlarge the picture. Those pictures are great for smaller pictures and my iPhone background. If you want even closer pictures and much sharper quality you should go with a lense which has a longer focal length and works with a FX camera format. These lenses work great on a DX format camera and actually give you an increase in the focal length due to the sensor size. I have read that the 28-300 is a nice lens for the price and would provide even better pictures than my 18-200. But, you must remember, the D5000 has a smaller sensor so you will only be able to enlarge them so much before they start becoming soft. I have a D800 and it provides a huge increase in the amount of detail captured and the size to which a picture can be enlarged.

Enjoy your D5000. It is a great camera to get into the hobby with.

The camera is identified on device manager on Windows 7 SP1 64-Bit. However, the drivers are not loaded . The Nikon NX2 ver 2.8 has been installed. Does anyone have an idea to resolve this issue?

I have a D5000 that is a number of years old, and would like to get higher resolution. However, I don't want to pay for a whole new camera body. Is it possible to change the CMOS sensor to a 16.1 Mpixel (as in D5100) or 24.2 Mpixel (as in D5200), and then upgrade camera firmware?

Over 417 *million* camera actuations on a D5000 -- how?

I was recently given a used D5000 camera, and after checking over some EXIF data in a set of shots, I notice the camera actuations to be over 471 million! I checked with a few different EXIF tools, and they all report the same.

How is it possible to see a number more than 4000x the factory-rated actuations? Beyond that, how does one generate so many actuations? That number represents an actuation of 1 per second for 14 *years* (the camera isn't even that old). Thus, I can't believe this number is real.

Is it possible there's a bug that has corrupted the field that stores the number of actuations?

Examining one of the photo's number in a programmer calculator (I've uploaded it so you can check yourself):
471,473,522 = 0001 1100 0001 1010 0001 1101 0111 0010

By only considering the right-most 16 bits, the number seems reasonable: 7538.
The number of the left-most 16 bits (after shifting >>16) is 7194.

I can't help wonder if the upper 16 bytes were perhaps corrupted with that number. Any ideas? Has anybody seen something like this before? I tried Googling for something similar, but was unsuccessful, hence this post.

Thanks for any information or advice. Cheers!

Hi,
When I try to make a video in my D5000 camera, the maximum length that it allows is just 20 min. Is there any way to change this so there is no time limit? (other than your memory available)

Thanks so much

Answer:
Nothing you can do, the only work around is to briefly pause and then restart video recording. You will them get another 20 minutes. Won't work too many times as the sensor will overheat.
Then take the two videos and stitch together with the video editing software included in View NX2.
