I use the D700 in my job to interact with college students and it never has dissappointed me or the students. We've have traveled to Ghana, Mexico and across the Bering Strait into Russia and numberous locations around the midwest. Handling and image quality are exceptional. Even have done a few student weddings. Also used D70 and D200.

Sensor Rocks....everything else is in question
I shoot D3's...needed a backup body in a pinch and bought the 700 for the sensor to keep consistent in the settings as I swap between bodies - shooting live editorial and events.
I'm a pro and NPS member. The D700 I own- DIED and by Nikon's Tech team - is beyond economic repair.
The damage it suffered was "moistness" leading to the effect of liquid damage....frying 100% of the circuit boards...turning the device into a $2800 paperweight.
I am really disappointed with the LACK OF WEATHER SEALING on this body.....the same conditions that killed my D700 are the same that numerous D3's have lived through. The D700 is not a pro-sumer or Pro body - it's a consumer camera with a great ship that is over priced.
The sensor is the king....the shutter is a joke and doesn't compare tot he D3....some say no biggie - at the price...the D3 shutter should be in this body.
Where is the weather sealing that supports worldwide professional use?
Why can nikon NOT fix circuit boards at a cost?
I want the FX sensor with the D3 shutter...leave other things out and sell us that combo.....the added price of a D3 body is quite a spread.

amazing!
I had (have ) a D200 and have always enjoyed this camera. The main issue with me was always digital noise in lower light. Even at ISO 800 in most cases, I had to use third party noise reduction software plugins in photoshop, etc. I had heard that the D700 was a gem in shooting in low light. WOW, that is so true! I am so impressed with this!
I have only had the D700 since May and will learn more about it in time. I am so very happy with this camera so far. I have no regrets about purchasing it. A wonderful product. Full frame option is also very nice.

Best camera I've ever owned.
A very capable camera. After 1 1/2 years I've only learned a little of what it can do. I especially appreciate the low-light (high iso) performance.
"Full frame" is a mixed blessing -- better for a wide angle view but not so good for telephoto shots of wildlife.

Wonderful camera, with slight design flaws
The D700 helps me take excellent photos, is responsive, well laid-out, has very good white balance, although I am always futzing with it in raw editing. The low light sensitivity is a treat and what I bought it for (to supplement my D2X), although I would still like less noise in high ISO, low light situations. I could wish it weighted less, but it does balance my heavy f2.8 lenses nicely. It is the closest camera I have found to the smooth operation and sublime feel of the Nikon F100, and far more versatile. I do not like live view. It is a good feature, but extremely clumsy to use. Framing and focusing are bears with live view. It should be one button on the body and easier to use. I also look forward to seeing high def video on the successor to the D700. I would really like that to happen with a firmware change, if that is possible. The camera is too good and too expensive to set aside for lack of that feature.

Great Camera! Get it while you can! Coming from D3, this was to be my backup but ended up carrying it a lot.
Pros: much lighter than my D3
Cons: no 100% finder.

A great mini D3 for a great price
What can I say that has not been said already. Great pro level camera with outstanding features. Great AF system, ISO is incredible and true to Nikon a workhorse for the semi-professional or professional shooter. The flash commander build in is absolutely great when combined with the SB-900 / SB-600. Absolutely love it.

Outstanding value for a full-frame camera
The D700 offers many of the features of the much larger and more expensive D3 in a compact package. I like just about everything about the camera from its ease of operation, simple straight-forward menus to the outstanding image files. This is my second camera, playing backup to a D3S.

I purchased another Nikon product and once again I am not disappointed. I had 2 d-300's and started purchasing Full frame lens....when I had enough to purchase the 700 I did. Yes, Nikon is a bit more expensive but well worth the "investment!" The learning cure from the 300 to the 700 is minimal but provides some awesome photographs. I will purchase another 700 in the very near future..This is an investment to me...an investment in my company and my photogrpahy!

D700 is wonderful
I tested the D700 w A-FS6 0mm against a Mamiya/P645 back and a Best Light scaninng back and the D700 was as good as or better than the other two high end systems at a fraction of the cost.

Nothing but goooooood!
Honest, I have nothing bad to say about this camera, which I own two. Nikon cameras have always sooo easy to use, compared to Canon (yes, I used 5D and 1D II for three years before D700 was born).
I would really wish, though, Nikon had a 24-120 F4 VR lens to pair with this brilliant camera. Really, really hope so!!!

Noise performance
I do a lot of dim-light photography. The D700's ability to use high ISO allows great photos with minimlal noise at very high ISO.
This also helps in telephotos to stop motion and vibration--faster shutter speeds with high ISO.

Great camera, some slight drawbacks
I have been using my Nikon D700 heavily since it came out. Mostly I have been using old (and new) manual lenses like the 50 1.2 ai-s and the zeiss zf 100 f/2. My all round experience with the camera is that it is rugged, fast, trustworthy and helps me take great pictures.
The most important factors for me has been the intelligent solutions, having a bank of manual lenses i can choose from and similar features are great.
The camera also works great with my 70-200 2.8 when i shoot sports or a seldom wedding. It is fast, it finds focus 99% of the time and the high iso capability of the camera is great.
What i would want to change? Well, for one, I would use far stronger glue in the rubber-grip parts, they keep falling off all the time. I would also love if a Nikon d800 or d700x had 24.5Megapixels, so that i could print really, really large. Finally I also sometimes miss the HD movie function of my friend's 5d mkII.
All in all? A great camera. Classic.

Great Camera
It has been perfect for me since I got it when it first came out. Haven't had to clean the sensor once. Full frame is the ticket for people and landscape photography. I use it with the battery attachment which gives it the extra I desire for large hands. Spot on exposure. Fast enough for all situations I encounter. I rate it a solid 5 out of 5. Best Nikon I've ever owned.

Amazing Camera That Won't Break The Bank
The D700 is a feature rich DLSR that feels great and performs admirably. It feels substantial and sturdy - has easy 1 button access to all the top features and even has programmable buttons to set your favorites. One of the best things about it is it's wonderful performance in low light / high iso settings. Noise is barely an issue with it's great sensor.
If you are looking for an entry level professional camera but aren't ready to spend $5k - then the D700 is a perfect fit.

I have a D700 with an SB-800. You can sync the SB-800 at 1/8000 shutter speed. Here are the steps:In Menu >> Custom Settings Menu >> E - Bracketing/Flash >> Flash Sync Speed:
Set 'Internal flash sync speed' to '1/320s (Auto FP)'
In Menu >> Custom Settings Menu >> E - Bracketing/Flash >> Flash cntrl for built-in flash:
Set to 'Commander Mode' with settings:
Built in flash and Group B - Off ( mode: -- comp: --)
Group A :
Set 'Mode' to 'M' and 'Comp' to 1/1 (for full power flash.) You can also use the other modes: Automatic or iTTL - but, you will have to update the setting on the SB-800.
Click OK - not the 'back / left' button - it doesn't save!
On the SB-800:
Turn it on
Hold down 'MODE' and 'ON/OFF' to reset to default settings
Hold down 'SEL' button
Go to top right square
Set to 'REMOTE'
Hold down 'SEL'
On D700:
Pop-up the internal flash
Make sure the red panel on the SB-800 is within sight of the D700 internal flash
Crank up the aperture and shoot up to 1/8000 shutter speed!

If you shoot with radio controllers like the Radio poppers and pocket wizards can you shoot at higher sync speeds. Check the radio controller's website for which models do allow high speed sync. You do lose some power in your flash and have to move them in closer to the subject. You can make the sun a fill light and your flash the sun with radio controllers, such as the PX line of Radio Poppers.Cannot afford radio controllers I got a fix for that.
You can turn you camera body upside down to shoot at a higher sync speed. What happens is the shutter will cut off the bottom of the frame due to the sync. Many wedding photographers learned this trick during the film days. Just keep your subject in the bottom half of the frame ( everything being upside down and backwards on a slr body bottom is the cameras top). It's then a simple matter of rotating the frame in post production and no one is the wiser. You might gain a stop over the max sync speed for your model camera.

Yes you can as long as it is not designated with DX (crop sensor only). One of the reasons why I have been a Nikon owner since the early 1990s is that compatibility is not an issue with lenses I bought back when I had my Nikon N90 film camera. I still use my N90. It should work well if it is an auto focus lens. A big advantage of the D700 is its ability to use the older FX lenses. I own and have purchased some great Nikon lenses on Ebay from former users of Nikon film cameras. It is new and not a gray market camera...I just returned from PSW and every vendor there said it wasn't the water damage after the quake, but radiation that caused the factory to close. Proof? No. Resistant, yes.As stated elsewhere, even if your camera can survive being outside while it is sprinkling or in a nice dust storm,, your lens may not. You will have to verify both pieces are weather resistant.

Hi Sayan,The D700 is sealed against moisture and dust. YES, It's tough but treat it like it's worth what you paid. it is water and dust resistant. Your lens may or may not be. Dry it or at least wipe it if it get's soaked. It is electronic and water is it's natural enemy. Best way I know to tell you is treat it like a baby and it will last a very long time.

The way I do it on my D3s is to set the camera to M mode and turn the Shutter speed down until you see bulb. You will need to hold the shutter button for the duration of the exposure. I would recommend getting the MC-36 Remote which has a shutter lock function and/or a timer setting.

You need to enter manual mode by holding mode and rotating your rear selector to "M" (you'll see it on the screen) when your in manual exposure mode keep turning your rear selector to the left and you'll get longer and longer exposure times and you'll hit "bulb". hope that helped you.Mar 8, 2011 by

Tough question.I went from a D200 to a D700 just 4 months ago, and I never regret it. If I where to bet, don't expect the D800 to come out before August, then allow 8 months before they come into the stores. There are D700 bargains out there, where they are going for just under $2000
A D800 will most likely be more mPix (how many?), but the build will be the same. However, plan on a $3000 price tag at first.
Your lenses dictate everything anyway. I have seen many folks throw a cheap lens on a D700.
No point! Buy the great lenses and a cheap body. I bet you could get a used D700 for a $1000 in a couple on months.

There is a 90 degree adapter for the D700. The new one is a DR-5 for round eyepiece cameras (D3 series & D700). The DR-6 is for rectangular eyepieceYour best bet is to get a used DR-3 and a DK-7 adapter (for round eyepiece) it is a better build than the DR-5 or 6. There is also a square adapter for used with the rectangular eyepieces as well.

When referring to the camera’s performance in low light and difficult ISO situations, Shaub touted the camera as the “best quality available.” Schaub also noted the ability to get maximum functionality from vintage Nikon lenses with the D700’s FX-Format sensor. Schaub concluded his review by saying there is no doubt that the 12-megapixel cameras will be a good fit for any photographer.
