excellent camera i received this camera as a gift. WOW what great pictures it takes. easy to learn, very fast shutter, light weight. i have taken only about 200 photos so far and purchased a 55-200vr lense to go along with the 18-55 lense that came with the camera. together these lenses and camera take the best pictures I have ever taken. EXCELLENT. there are many cameras out there that take good pictures but NIKON cameras with their lenses are second to none for the price. my friend is a professional and this is the camera she carries every day for fast accurate day to day shots. COOL. December 11, 2011
Easy to use, great product The D40X is one of the easiest products to use. It handling is simple and the quality of the pictures is excellent September 5, 2011
AMAZING!!!! This is the best camera ever!!! The price is good and quality is amazing!!! I have read the manual and watched the videos thousand of times and I love this camera. I never leave the house without it. I love taking photos and now LOVE photography. It is now a sersious passion!!! Love it!!! :) September 4, 2011
Amatures tool This is a great camera for someone wanting to break into photography. The manual mode has all the adjustable basics a good photographer needs to explore and refine their skill. With the advent of new cameras there will always be room for upgrades, but this is an entry level tool worth the money. Use this camera to see if you want to take photography to the next level. Great point and shoot in Auto mode for the family on the go. April 18, 2011
Great Start This was my first D-SLR camera. And I'm still using it. Took great pictures right out of the box, and as my skills grew - the camera kept pace. I'm a big believer in shoot it right - not fix it later. And this camera does a great job and helps you learn all the basics. The menus and interface are a snap to learn. Frankly when I borrow my husband's D5000 I miss that! You can't go wrong with this camera. April 15, 2011

Answer:
Mine does the same thing, and im not sure why it does this. It also makes some type of rumbling noises when it wont take a picture. and sometimes it takes quite a few tries to take one, unless of course it is in manual mode, then it will take. Could this be the AF motor? Let me know if you figure it out. .

Answer:
I have the same issue with mine. If I'm in a situation that I'm shooting a subject that isn't moving around a lot I use the auto focus the switch the lens to manual and it helps. However I think this issue has only come up within the last year or two, a real pain to deal with.

Answer:
Are you getting focus?. Press the shutter half way till focus is achieved, or manually focus, then press the shutter button fully to take the picture. Does it happen all the time or only in certain situations ?.

Even when I put in a brand new, fully charged factory battery, I get no green area on the battery indicator. I also did it with two new after market batteries. Not surprisingly, the shutter moves very slow and takes blurry pictures as it would if I was using a dead batterty,

This model offers a Digital Vari-program modes. Selecting a program automatically optimizes settings to suit the selected scene, making creative photography as easy as rotating the mode dial. In this case you can use the Night Portrait.

This model does not have a "LiveView" feature. You would need a D3100, a D5000 or a D5100.

I have a D40x camera and a Nikon SMZ645 microscope. I would like a lens attachment that can slide in the eyepiece slot on the microscope and take full field of view photos similar to what you see looking through the eyepiece.

Review

September 2007, Nikon D40x Review

by Dan Richards
September 2007

Popular Photography & Imaging's Dan Richards listed the D40x as the star in his "Top 25 Best Buys." Richards praised the D40x for its high-scoring image quality ratings, extensive control settings, and its ability to defy burst rates for the category. Richards noted that in tests, the D40x shot 100 consecutive highest-resolution JPG images at rates faster than 3 fps at high compression translating into very quick single-frame capture.
