Professional Quality at the Speed of a Noob The speed as which you get great quality comes at the price of time. This Camera is a butter knife that cuts like an axe. I will be upgrading to a D4 from this D200 so its worth its money and then some. Its built like a tank. It has over 250,000 pictures on it and still shooting. This thing wont break or skip a beat. It took me about 5 years to fully master this camera in conjunction with Capture NX2. The Capture NX2 is absolutely necessary with this camera or you will not fully unlock its full power. Its so great its been re badged for its 4th time with the new D3000 Nikon's intro line. I would not recommend it for shooting for clients but for the enthusiast that loves photoshop and the look of a pro quality picture with time to spare. Pick it up. You wont be dissapointed April 28, 2011
The best! I purchased the D200 when an earlier camera body quit unexpectedly. I'm so glad I bought it! Wonderful build quality, great ergo-metrics, quick shutter response, and built like a tank. This has been my favorite camera since purchase. I like the battery bay on the vertical grip much better than the version on the D300. I just wish Nikon had just updated it with newer electronics and left everything else alone. April 16, 2011
highly dependable I recently retired after 40 years as a professioal photographer and am amazed when I think of the full circle I've completed. Starting my early career with two Nikon cameras, a 35mm Nikkormat, and 35mm F2Photomic both film based. Forty years later, I'm still using a Nikon, the D200 digital and am amazed at it's performance. I spend a good deal of my retirement in the desert, and make hundreds and hundreds of exposures under some demanding lighting/weather situations. I've never had a failure with the D200. April 15, 2011
Versatility When i can afford it i will moderenize up to a D300 or better. My D200 can do it all, the best metering system in any camera's i have owned. The features of the D200 make easier to take photos that even my old F5 could not. I look forward to a newer model, but it would be hard pressed to out do what i have. What is nice about nikons in general is the interchangability of lenes. Great product. Never had any problems with any nikon products. April 15, 2011
Obsolete but worth owning I've been using the Nikon D200 for about 2 years now, having gone from a D40, D80, and a refurb D1x. Still using a three-year-old 18-200mmG VR (1st Gen), and a second-hand 28-80 3.5-5.6 ED I picked up about a year ago. The D200 is built like a tank (chair blew over in a stiff wind, and it bounced from 18" off some hard Texas red granite, without a scratch), has the controls I want, and feels like a camera should, Weighs a ton, and I like it like that. Image quality is outstanding. 'nuff said. April 14, 2011
Out-of-date but still great The D200 was my first high quality digital camera, having been a member of the film and silver-based print club for many years. I bought it several years ago and have since graduated to a D700. But, I still shoot that D200. It's especially useful with long lenses since that smaller APS-C sensor increases the effective focal length by a factor of 1.5. This allows me to use a full-frame 400mm and have an effective focal length of 600mm. As I don't own a 600mm telephoto, I'm quite happy to use that old D200 to obtain those really long shots without spending a small fortune on a new lens. Besides, the D200 is still a great camera, even if it's kind of long in the tooth. April 14, 2011
This camera has elevated my photography to a highe My first digital camera was a Nikon D70, which I still have. Wanting to take my photography to an even higher level I purchased the D200. The D200 has truly changed the way I photograph. I shoot a great deal of Lacrosse games and with the flexibility of the features in the D200 I have taken many excellent photos. With the 5fps I have gotten some incredible photos. I have become the photographer for a lacrosse team because of the quality of the shots. It doesnt matter that the camera is several years old, it is the quality of the D200 and its features that makes it a perfect camera to use. April 14, 2011
Excellent all-around digital SLR I ever had. I have been using this camera for over three years & I am still discovering new things I can do with regards to digital photography. There are still a lot of features of this camera that I need to learn. I have taken amazing clear & colourfull pictures of all my travels. January 2, 2011
Everything about this camera is great. Great burst and recovery rate and large LCD. December 5, 2010
Just love this little camera Just love it as a back-up or a tag along camera with a fix focal lens. I have done some commercial work with it, since it was use for either web-sites or small printing for brochure and sale sheets. When the job requires I rent for now a d3X, when the work flow becomes more steady I shall purchase a d3X. November 20, 2010
One of the Best Semi-Professional DSLRs Ever Made Even though the D200 is not by any means new, it is still an excellent camera. The image quality is excellent. The great number of external controls makes it very enjoyable to shoot with. The ergonomics are very good, and are even better with the battery grip. The build quality is superb. The magnesium alloy body makes the camera feel very solid in the hand. The battery life is not the best, so it is good to carry a spare battery or use the battery grip. Even though this camera has seen many years, I would still recommend it to people looking for a rugged, good quality, superb shooting DSLR. September 23, 2010
D200 Great all-around camera I have been shooting my D200 for four years and it is a great camera. I have taken it to Death Valley and also the mountains in Utah and New Hampshire. My only criticism is that the rubber grip tends to unstick and must be tucked back in on a regular basis. September 20, 2010
Maybe the best digital SLR ever ! I love this camera, my wife allowed me to buy this D200 just before my trip to Romania. The camera exeded all expectations. It took pictures inside Old Orthodox churches,cathedrals,2000 years old ruins along the Black Sea (Histria),Dracula castles, former dictator's palace, etc. The D200 did not let down once. So after buying the camera in Edmonton Canada, the D200 vent to Austria,Romania and Serbia. I will never get rid of this camera, i only wish it was still made in Japan...at least the SB900 is. July 14, 2012
OK but lacking some obvious needs Rubber parts need to be done away with because heat and sweat cause them to swell and become loose. Replace with molded plastic/acrylic with a grip surface. Camera needs built-in remote shutter capability. Images with DX lenses not as crisp and clear as its Canon counterpart. August 8, 2011
Still a grat camera I have used my D200 for several years now. Will update soon, but will never part with it. I will continue to use my D200 for underwater photography. Love to have a new body for ISO and focusing updates. MegaPix has never been an issue. June 22, 2011
Great camera with 18-200mm Lens Wasn't much of a fan of digital cameras until I started using the D100 and stepped up to the D200-like the way it feels like one of my old film cameras and I have complete creative control-I miss my film cameras but I must say that this camera is great DSLR-I have taken hundreds of great shots with this camera-I would like to graduate to the D300-it out of my price range at the moment. Guess I'll keep on clicking with the D200 for now. June 13, 2011
Works great, no complaints This is my first dslr and when updateing from a manual camera to the d200 wow what a difference. All automated and is like a point and shoot. I hae been looking at other models in the line to upgrade but when I look at the features and cost compaired to the d200 I will keep the d200. April 14, 2011
Great backup camera This camera makes a great backup camera of the other high-end cameras. However, this is my main camera. Two draw backs: it eats batteries like crazy, so I recommend getting the additional battery pack with the vertical grip, and still have an extra set of batteries. Usually a fully charged set would last through three quarters of a football game. The ISO is poor at 1600, but when I compare the pics to those I shot with 1600 film, the quality is the same. The D300s has replaced this version. But it meets my needs. April 14, 2011
Served me well Being my first DLSR it has worked well for the many years I have had it April 14, 2011
very good slr I use normally for lanscape and macro Very easy to use and complete April 14, 2011
The go anywhere, and go through anything camera... To sum it up in one sentence: This camera can go anywhere with you, be put through the toughest conditions and light permitting will produce razor sharp images every time. Now to give a little more detail... I have had this camera for a while now, and it is old, outdated, and considered a classic. But I will not get rid of my D200. I have a D300s now as my primary, but the D200 is still a great camera and I take it on the more rugged outdoor trips. The only area that the D200 does not excel is high ISO. Anything above ISO 1000 is really pushing it depending on how long your shutter exposures is, and what kind of light you are in. I have seen sites say anything above 400 ISO but that is hogwash, 800 it is still good, it's above that 1000 mark (depending on lighting type) that the noise becomes very busy. I do however have some ISO 1600 shots that have been keepers, that is few and far between though. Also due to the age of my camera, I have quite a few hot pixels when taking long exposure night shots. If you need a camera to shoot activities outside and during the day time, in in good lighting in general... you will not find a body that can perform this well for the price you can get it for now days. A very god camera for the serious hobbyist/budding pro that wants to spend less money on a Nikon body, and more on pro Nikon glass. December 15, 2010
An acceptable tank. Image quality is okay, as are the basic features. It does seem to grow dead pixels at an alarming rate - will soon be unusable. The camera's meter can't keep up with the motor drive - you'll get differently exposed frames when firing away with the camera set to auto-exposure. That said, I have shot hundreds of thousands of frames, and it just keeps going. April 14, 2011

Hello, I would like to take 5 photos set at -2, -1, 0, +1, +2. I can easily set this up but is there a way to have the camera take all 5 pictures in a row by just pressing the shutter release once? I don't want to have to press the shutter release 5 times to take these 5 pictures.

Answer:
You have to press the shutter 5 times or you can set the camera in continuous but you will need to hold the shutter button down until it takes the 5 pictures.

I have the same problem and am using an "approved" memory card (SDCFX (Extreme III) 4 GB). The card has been in use for quite some time. After image download to computer, the card has been routinely reformatted in-camera.

You can set this up yourself by going to the setup menu (with the little wrench icon) and adding a commentary line to your photos. I have it set to add my e-mail address in stead of my serial number though.

Answer:
Nikon does not disclose camera API code, but you'll find a lot about if you do an Internet search. As to controlling the D200 from a computer, you have the $180 Nikon Camera Control Pro 2, and, again with some Internet search, you'll find several third party software that will provide you with some camera control functionality - some of them even for free - although I don't know of any that gives you absolute full control as the NCCP does.

Answer:
1) The D200 shares the basics with most dSLRs. The instruction manual is probably the best start. If you like to read, several intermediate and advanced books about the D200 are available at most online book stores. If you prefer more intuitive tutorials, there are literally *hundreds* if you search the web for "d200 tutorials". Last - but not least -, try to learn one item at a time, try it on the camera, take notes, and only then move on to a different subject. I may suggest you start learning the 6 most important settings: autofocus (continuous and single; focusing area), diaphragm aperture (depth of field control, diffraction control, best sharpness point), shutter speed, ISO, and white balance. After these, complete your knowledge with flash usage (specially the different shutter syncs available). Enjoy the process!

2) It's a fairly old camera, made way before digitutor was released. Since it's been discontinued for almost four years now, I don't believe Nikon will put the effort (and the cost) of developing one.

American Photo Editor’s Choice 2006 Award

“If we had to pick a single American Photo camera of the year, the Nikon D200 would take that honor,” stated American Photo in their July/August 2006 issue. Distinguished as an American Photo “Editor’s Choice 2006,” editors were impressed with the small size, yet feature-full package of the camera. Refined, advanced, best of class, sturdy and extremely responsive were some of the ecstatic words editors used to describe the camera after they enjoyed the superb image quality and menu system of the D200.

May/June 2006, Nikon D200

by Jonathan Barkey

In its May/June 2006 issue, American Photo calls the D200 “the best mid-priced DSLR you can buy.” Jonathan Barkey states that the D200 is a “home run” and “a pleasure to have and to hold” in his glowing review of the camera. Noting that the D200 is extremely responsive with a “big for its class” optical viewfinder and a “rock-solid construction,” Barkey also notes his fulfillment with the camera’s variety of user-friendly attributes. He praises the D200 on its ability to pack the core features of high-priced cameras into a “smaller, lighter package” advising photographers to consider this mid-priced digital SLR when purchasing a top-of-the-line camera.

May 2006, Nikon D200

by George Schaub

According to Shutterbug Editorial Director, George Schaub, digital SLR cameras have “opened up a new world of low-light and hand-held shooting” and the built-in noise reduction filter in Nikon’s D200, makes photography an “even more attractive pastime.” Schaub also states that the D200 delivers imaging power for enlargements, crops to 8x10 prints and has more imaging options than one could imagine—not much this camera cannot handle.

Review

April 2006, Nikon D200

by Michael McNamara

Popular Photography & Imaging Executive Technology Editor, Michael McNamara, clarified some of his unanswered questions during an in-depth review of the D200 in the magazine’s April issue. Stating that images from the D200 “rival” those from the D2X, McNamara gave the D200 a rave review. He also notes that the D200 has superb color accuracy, and the images it produces have great saturation and a wide dynamic range.
