Still a great camera, considering it's age This was my first digital camera, bought it when it first came out many years ago. I still use it as my main DSLR today, although I do have a D7000 on order. I love this camera, even though it's only 6mp. I've used it for weddings, car shows, rodeos, concerts, etc, and it has never failed me. My only complaint, is the noise with ISO settings higher than 400. But considering the age of this camera, it still performs very well, and with good light, it produces great photos. I still plan on using it after I get my new camera...actually planning on converting it to an IR camera. I'll continue using this camera, until the shutter gives out.. Great camera. July 6, 2012
An old reliable friend I purchased this camera when it first Mae out. Since then I have owned various Nikon models including the D300 which was an awesome camera. I was forced to sell my D300 togethere with all my accessories but I have kept the D50. It wasn't until I started using it again that I realised how good it really is. I can honestly say that, apart from noise issues in low light, the D50 is awesome. Easy to use, intelligent and very very reliable. It's a lot closer to a film SLR than the newer high spec models. On comparing shots taken with my D300 with those of the D50, it is clear to me that, if image size was not an issue, the D50 could win hands down. Thank the lord I didn't sell it. I still use it for weddings, christenings etc to great effect. April 26, 2012
By Far My Favorite Toy I have had this camera for several years, (my wife got it for a wedding gift to me). I have never been anyting but pleased with it. It is very easy to use and understand and I have not found anything to do with it that I couldn't accomplish without a little know how. This has been an amazing treat and I while I know that I need to get a new camera (or at least a newer one with video) This one will still be one of my first and best loves. April 12, 2012
Great Camera I got this camera used. Even though it was used I have no complaints! I love it! It is a great starter camera for anyone wanting to enter the world of dSLR's. February 23, 2012
I have enjoyed this camera for several years. It has worked as advertised with only one minor problem with was repaired. My next camera will probably be a D90. December 1, 2011

Answer:
I am not sure this will help, but I have found that if the lens is not fully seated,, you get the F--. In my case it only happened with my Tamron 18-270 lens, which Tamron fixed under warrantee as a known problem with the D90 only. In my case Manual mode would not be available nor any other mode.

Answer:
There are lots of issues surrounding this question. Let me simply list the facts, and I think it will allow you to see the big picture:

Background:

CLS is a flash system developed for digital SLR cameras that may or may not include wireless capabilities, depending on the equipment. CLS is not compatible with any film TTL camera systems. The primary mode that CLS supports is the iTTL mode that was developed specifically for digital cameras. The older TTL mode was used on Speedlights that were sold for film cameras.

Facts:

* The D50 is a CLS compatible camera, but it does not have a built-in Commander, so it cannot control CLS speedlights wirelessly. It can only operate CLS flashes in its hot shoe or with a flash cable (details below). The D50 does not have a PC Sync output.

* An SC-28 or SC-29 is a flash cable that will allow you to connect a CLS speedlight to the hot shoe of a DSLR. This cable allows you to get the flash off-camera about three feet. You cannot daisy-chain multiple CLS speedlights using this cable.

* The SB400 is a CLS Speedlight that does not include any wireless capability. It can only work when mounted in a hot shoe on-camera or off-camera using a CLS flash cable.

* The SB600 is a CLS Speedlight that can work either in the hot shoe on-camera or wirelessly. However, since the D50 does not have a built-in Commander, the SB600 can only work in the hot shoe of the D50 or off-camera using a CLS flash cable.

* The SB20 is an old speedlight that was developed to work with the Nikon N2020 film camera. It is NOT compatible with the CLS system, so it cannot work in iTTL mode on the D50. It can, however, work in Manual or Auto mode. In Manual mode you have to set the power of the flash manually. In Auto mode, the flash reads the reflected energy in the scene and shuts off the flash when it reaches the correct amount.

* There is a film TTL flash cable that will allow you to daisy-chain multiple SB20's off camera when attached to a film camera. This cable will not work with DSLR cameras like the D50.

So, the bottom line answer to your question is no. You cannot use any of these for multiple flash, either wireless or cabled.

Answer:
The SB-20 can be use in Auto Non-TLL, Manual, and Rear-curtain Sync. D50 doesn't have the commander mode option (you can use the SU-800 wireless commander). Also, you will need to set the SB-400 in a SU-4 in order to convert it in a slave flash. The SB-600 you can set it up as a master flash in the camera to trigger the other (not as a commander) or as remote flash if you’re using the SU-800.
