Awesome point and shoot camera
This camera is great. It is exactly what I want. I don't want to carry around a big SLR or a bunch of lenses and equipment. I just want something that is small enough to take everywhere, and that will take great pictures. This camera does that. It gives me all the flexibility I need with almost all of the adjustments you get in an SLR.

fantastic camera
My CoolPix 7100 does everything and more than my non -Nikon D SLR does. I love the light weight, compact design, easy to change settings. The zoom saves lugging extra lenses and the view finder is a necessity when the sun is very bright. I especially like the flash switch...so easy to use without going to a menu . The same can be said for changing Quality settings. This is my first Nikon and I am extremely pleased with my new purchase.

Its a Nikon, say no more!
I purchased the Nikon P7100 because of the larger sensor and extensive manual features. I have had the camera now for close to a month and could not be happier with the overall performance. I upgraded from a 12.2 mega pixel point and shoot and I can say the dynamic range of both contrast and colors with this Nikon P7100 camera are outstanding. I have been working with all the features and noticed the controls for these features are very easy to access with all the function buttons on this camera. My passion is macro photography and this P7100 does a very nice job, no complaints. The tilting display makes it very nice to shoot at all angles, a must for macro. The low light capabilities are also a plus, thanks to the larger sensor and wide angle lense. Oh and did I mention the lens? Well it is Nikkor glass, thats what defines a Nikon and this P7100 is truly Nikon all the way. I could go on and on about the features but it is easier to just say if you are looking to upgrade to an advanced point and shoot with extensive manual controls then do not hesitate to purchase a Nikon P7100, you will not be disappointed. .

Great features in a nice compact camera
As a long time Nikon DSLR shooter, I was getting tired of hauling the big dslr & its lenses around all the time, especially on short trips, so I went looking for an advanced compact camera to provide most of what my dslr does without the weight. The other requirement was no lens changes. The P7100 meets those requirements plus brings more options than I had even thought about. Fairly steep learning curve; got David Busch's guide to help. Just one week into the new camera; the pictures are great & it is so much fun to shoot with!

Quality Product
Improved over P7000 - Faster, better white balance and color rendition (better than primary competition). Great battery life. Good feature set. Good build quality. Reliability to be determined. Expected to be good based on previous Nikon experience.
Could benefit from UV haze filter and Polarizing filter.
Quick disconnect neck strap would improve versatility.

On-Screen Histogram Does Not change as Exposure Settings Change
In manual mode, the on-screen histogram never changes, even when I change f-stops and shutter speeds. The histogram and screen always seem to show a properly-exposed picture. Why won't the histogram (and the screen, for that matter) adjust to show the actual exposure which will result as my exposure settings (i.e., f-stop and shutter speed) change?

Has anyone tried a SanDisk Extreme Pro SD card (95MB/s, 600x) w/ the P7100?
Jan 6, 2012 by
I just received my P7100, and I need to upgrade to a faster SD card. From my brief research, I see that SanDisk has been making a 45MB/s (300x) SD card since early 2011, and they just released a 95MB/s card.
Has anyone tried these very fast SD cards with the P7100, and do they help speed up the camera's operation over a 10 - 30MB/s (66x - 200x) SD card? Do they help speed up the camera when bracketing or increase the camera's frames per second? Are these UHS-1 standard cards even compatible with the P7100, or does the camera resort back to treating it as a Class 10 (10MB/s, 66x) card?

Answer:
Today I purchased a 8GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SD card (95MB/s, 600x write). There is definitely an improvement over my old Class 4 (4MB/s) SD card that I already owned, but I would say the speed improvement is about 2.5x faster than the Class 4 card. In other words, somewhat as expected, it operates as a typical Class 10 SD card. Before I purchased this SD card, I did hear from Nikon Tech Support which said that this camera does not support the new UHS-1 standard for ultra-fast writing to the SD card. The (very nice) Nikon D7000 does. I asked if they were planning a firmware upgrade to allow for this, but there are no announced plans at this time.
To illustrate the speed differences, I turned on the bracketing for 5 frames. With the Class 4 card, the camera took about 20 seconds to write the 5 NRW (Nikon RAW) / 10MP images. With this new Class 10 card, the camera took about 8 seconds.
For continuous shooting, the camera operates at ~1.2fps, and it does not appear to depend on the speed of the SD card. On BASIC setting / 10MP, NORM/ 10 MP, or FINE / 10 MP, I could shoot continuously with either card (I stopped at 50 shots). However, On NRW (Nikon RAW) / 10 MP, only 5 shots can be taken with either card. So if you need to shoot continuously, do not shoot in NRW.
So, for my wish list on this camera (or future versions of this camera), I wish Nikon would enable the UHS-1 SD card standard, the ability to continuously shoot in NRW over 5 images, and a little faster fps rate on the continuous shooting. But my biggest wish for future versions of these "P" series cameras would be the ability to screw on filters -- I really like using a polarizer, especially when I'm hiking (and when I don't really want to carry a full SLR.)

How does the P7100 display realtime battery power level?
My P7000 only indicates when the battery is getting low so I never really know before I leave with it whether I should charge it or not.
I want to upgrade but this feature is important to me.
I use this camera as back-up to my D700

PC Magazine’s Jim Fisher posted his review of the Nikon COOLPIX P7100, giving it a very good rating. He explained that the camera is ideal for those photographers who are looking for a point & shoot, but want to be in control of every setting. "The P7100 performed well in our Lab tests," Fisher noted. Features that were impressive included the 7.1x zoom, which is the largest in its class; as well as the fact that it bested the competition with regards to startup and shutter lag speeds. He added: "If you’re set on a digital compact camera with an optical viewfinder and lots of manual controls, the Nikon Coolpix P7100 won’t disappoint."
