This camera performs.
I bought this camera because my friend had it and I reallly liked the pictures she had taken. It has performed extremely well in all situations: Shuttle launch video, riding video, bands, flowers, birds, rain, etc. I'm convinced of its construction quality because it flew out of my hand on a recent trike ride and ended up in the middle of the road. I lost the battery door and the battery but not the SD which was loaded with pictures. I bought a new battery, charged it up, downloaded my pictures, took the camera through all its settings and added a little duck tape for the battery door. It works like new but looks like junk. I will likely spring for another Coolpix in the future because I really like the size and quality of the photes. Thanks NIKON.

The best features on a camera.
The new Nikon is amazing. It has all features a camera needs. I went to Niagara Falls with the camera and the footage it took was fabulous. Best Camera created by Nikon so far.

Fantastic, Fun Camera
This camera was great right out of the box. I previously owned a Nikon CoolPix. After 10 years of happily using it, it became possessed and started turning itself on and off, repeatedly. I really wanted another CoolPix, since I thought that my old one was so good and had served me for so long. I shopped around and found the S3100. I jumped when I saw the price and features. It's so easy that you could use it without doing any reading to discover everything else special that it can do. I don't understand the few negative reviewers' comments. This camera can't take a bad picture. I used it for photos for a business proposal, and everyone was so impressed with the pictures even when printed with a color laser printer on plain bond paper. It's fun and easy to take great pictures. It's such a good buy for a fantastic price. It's one of the best buys I've made all year.

I just bought the s3100 Coolpix, and im not finding it overly user friendly. My biggest issue is i want to be able to take pictures and not have them come out all blurry cus i dont have a very steady hand when its comes to photography or if im walking and dont have time to stop i want to be able to take the picture as im moving. How can i do this?

you can try looking at the different settings...there might be action, or sports, or something? if not, something i sometimes do is take a video instead, so i can be walking around and stuff, and then, when i upload it to the computer, snip out that frame. it might not be the ideal photo taking expieriance, but at least it records your memories all the same! good luck!Nov 4, 2011 by

I need this feature in the real estate business. we don't print the pictures, the date must show up on the digital image we upload into various bank's systems. My boss has the Nikon P1 and it has this feature. Not sure how old the P1 is, but I have not been able to locate it in a store in my area.

All Coolpix models have the Date Imprint feature. On the Coolpix P1 you just have to rotate de mode dial on top of the camera to SET UP to select DATE IMPRINT and press OK.
Despite having a very high resolution/megapixil number, it seems to be compressing the images when they're saved to the card. My old (non-Nikon) camera took pictures at 4mp and the file size was 3mb. The S3100 at 14mp is barely 3mb, and it shows in the images - they look fuzzy where I expect them to look crisp. The manual says nothing about this setting (that I can find) - is this a possible adjustment?

The max resolution for your camera is 4320x3240 which would indeed give you a file size of approximately 3mb, look on page 38 of your manual as there appears to be a setting slightly higher than the default.Im not so sure about your old camera giving you 3meg files from 4mp's unless of course it was shooting in or being converted to TIFF or Bitmap.

Some of them show up but not all of them. When I scroll through to view them, some of them say it contains no image data. When I put my SD card in my computer, they are all there.

My computer does not recognize the device, I connect the two with the USB cable that came with the camera. So the default HD version only takes like 58s videos and the lowest setting only gets to about 29 minutes. I need to be able to take hour+ long photos,I have a coolpix s550 that takes 2 hour videos on it's lowest quality, how can i get the same out of the S3100??

The maximum file size for a single movie is 2GB or the maximum movie length for a single movie is 29 minutes, even when there is sufficient free space on the memory card for longer recording. You can take several single movies depending on the size of your memory card.Please see page# 118 of the user's manual for the COOLPIX s3100.
I saw that in the manual, but it makes no since to me, why limit the size of the movies if there is more space available, it must be just a programming thing, would it be possible to turn off this limit or get an update to do so? I bought this camera to take long movies for work and need it to be able to record for longer times, is there any way around this 29 minute limit?

Why the image quality of my coolpix s3100 digital camera is worst?
in normal daylight the picture taken becomes very high contrast & the pictures become blur although the electronic vr mode is on & the camera was fixed!!! In night mode(auto flash or auto flash with red eye reduction) the pictures taken are more bright in some point & the flash causes high contrast..why?

The S series of Coolpix have pre-set settings. You can use one of the scene modes, like Night Landscape or Night Portrait. You may want to check the Performance models like the P7000, P500 or the P300 that you can control the shutter speed.
