I read the negitive reviews then the postive one i took a chance and bought it in 2012 for half price this is my first travel zoom camera. It does come with the sort of a brif owners manual summery what the camera does and a true owners manuel on a cd u can download it on your pc.Yes i do highy recommend that u read the manuel to compleaty understand the camera it is automatic camera for picture taking but when u get blured pictures u know what cause it and how to fix it. like is the viberation setting right is it in hybird mode or normel or off? is the motion dection on or off?? that has help me to get clear picture in the outher setting like night landscape,,,,night portrait,,,,,,backlighting,,,,,u have to know how to set this. gettting great pictures when you are in the settings u hit menu to bring extra settings u pick and choose what u wont then exit snap and look at the result i will say i do high recommend getting a small tripod i got a joby--gorilla tripod and set the camera on it and snap your pictures this tripod has made a huge differance in these settings i also recommend getting a extra battery when u do video and flash it drains it pretty fast so its nice to have a spare also noted to i talk to a camera professional about the differance between class6 and class 10 cards for this camera what he said was class 10 if you plan on doing more video then photo and u plan on editing that video to splice it together to make like a small flim but if your going to take mostley photos then a class 6 would do fine but look at the writing speeds get the highiest u can so i got a class 6 sandisk extream card it writes a 30x so far it has work wonderful the camera has not froze up or slow responce nothing so if that helps any ? before i finshed this camera has a digtel zoom feature to this feature steps down your pixil rate and increase your f/stops it also crops your picture to so u are at the maxium zoom length and snap a picture it may not turn out clear or look right u might have to do this trick i learn set on the tripod and set the slef timmer for 2sec get your picture where u wont it at then hit the shutter let the camera start the timer and let it snap it and see what u got it has help me get some decent pictures but i turn my digtel zoom offf and it has never faild to delever a great picture now i know i havent meation about video about this camera well i dont use it for video i use it for pictures nikon s9100 it is a great camera but read the manuel to get the best out of it

Excellent travel zoom
This little camera only lacks of manual adjustments( exposure/speed priority), but I believe most negative reviews are people who didn't read the manual, it has several features and options to get excellent pictures and the zoom is awsome (obviously zoom compromises sharpness, but this is not the point, you get a 18X zoom in your pocket!) this is a P&S camera with a huge zoom (ideal for travel) the flexibility and size you obtain is invaluable.
I also use some canon and nikon SRL's and a small p&s.

Fantastic photo,s from such a user friendly little point & shoot camera !
From the moment that it was removed out of the box and reading the quick start info, this camera just performed absolutely flawless in every respect. Other review's that I have read made this machine sound like a complete disaster but I'm totally convinced that their result's was just a simple cause of a mere operator error in every respect. The whole layout of this model is so easy and simple to use and understand that if your result's are terrible, I can't imagine what your pic's would look like if you were operating a less inferior camera of a different brand. All aside, this model from Nikon is the best point & shoot camera that I have owned and I've had a few. My hat's off to Nikon for such great innovative technology !

Call customer service... They told me to take the battery out and the memory card for one day then charge for a full 4 hours... this dis not work... I had the same problem I sent it in to be fixed... One day it was working okay took a long time for I was able to take pictures in a row had to wait... then the next day it worked okay then it just stop working the lens would come out and make this loud noise then I had to remove the batterie so the lens would go back in... You are probably doing nothing wrong, the simple fact of the matter is that a p&s will never give the same quality the a DSLR will. That said there are few things that you can do to help, using a tripod for a start to reduce camera shake. Use some form of off camera lighting beit a speed light, natural light or even desk lamps can be used to good effect. If your camera has a self timer use that as even though you might be using a tripod there is still the chance of movement when pressing the shutter button.Answer:

No, no bracketing, but it does have exposure compensation +/- 2 stops (I believe) Also, it does have a D-lighting and a built in "HDR" feature that helps to better tweak and capture difficult backlit and other situations where there is bright areas and dark areas. It does a pretty good job as far as compact cameras go in dealing with difficult shooting situations with bright/shade areas.Answer:

This is the number one complaint that I have with the S9100 -soft focus. It obviously gets worse, the lower the light level. Same as you, it is not the "shaking" as i use a tripod a lot and it is mentioned in many reviews as a characteristic of the photo quality from the S9100. Every once in a while you might get a sharp-"er" image but it doesn't seem consistent to figure out why, regardless of shooting conditions... But even the sharp images are not when you look at the image closeup, say a person's hair...Answer:

Purchased an s9100 on July 4th. Took a few dozen photos, then the lens froze, and display went blank, lense seemed to be making a clicking sound? Would not turn of via on/off button, so had to remove the battery to close the lense. I took the camera back to the retailer who replaced it with another s9100. I appreciate all of the features packed into this camera and the fact that it is Nikon but am concerned about its reliablity. Reading some of the reviews, it seems like this is more than a common issue. I am wondering if you recommend that I return this camera also, before it breaks and try a different brand? It almost sounds like it is a matter of time before this one stops working also.

I took my new S9100 to an outdoor concert last night. When I was using the zoom to take pictures while the sun was still shining, my pictures were turning out just fine. But, when it got dark, using the zoom was giving me blurry pictures. I would take the picture, making sure to focus on the singer. Then, I would look at the screen to see a crisp picture save to my memory card, and as it saved, it would turn blurry. Could you please tell me how I can avoid this problem or fix this issue?
Note: I have attached a photo taking in the sunlight that is great and one that was taken at night, so you could see the difference in quality to better address my question.

The camera senses when it's darker conditions, and it makes the shutter speed longer (i.e instead of 1/300th of a second it's 1/10th of a second), so the actions are blurred. Flash might help, but in general moving subjects in dark conditions are hard to shoot.Answer:

This may be related to an overall failure of the camera that we had. The camera "froze" and would not allow use of any button. Could not turn the camera off, take photos or zoom or menu etc. Only way to shut it down is to take out the battery. We returned it for repair.The only way to reset the camera to see if the error will clear is to remove the battery and memory stick for >24 hours, recharge completely and then turn on. If it will not clear and respond correctly there may be a problem to be repaied. Be sure to have your receipt from the purchase of your camera to verify 1 year Warranty is in force.

Sometimes when I travel it seems I need separate suitcase just for chargers. Does the battery need to be charged in an external charger or can it be charged in the camera itself. If it can be charged in the camera, can it be charged via USB?

Yes. The battery stays in the camera for charging. You connect the USB cable to the camera and to a small wall plug adaptor to charge the camera. This is the same cable used to move your pictures from the camera to your computer. The camera battery also charges while connected to the USB port on your computer. Unfortunately, you can get a "hard" copy only from printing it from your computer. That is unsatisfactory because it is large and unwieldy. I printed only a few pages that I will need when using the camera in the field, such as self-timer, shooting with panorama and macro mode. Is there a setting to change how long the picture previews or to speed up the recovery time in between shots? My camera seems to take too long in between pictures which makes it difficult to take multiple photos in a row. I chose this camera because of its high shutter speed but the long recovery time defies the purpose.

I would suggest looking in your manual and setting it for Hi frame rate...should do what you need...
