THIS CAMERA = WASTE OF MONEY!! I am very disappointed in this camera. I bought it a couple of years ago. About 9 months ago it started saying "Lens error" which must be a common problem. It wouldn't take pics so I sent it to Nikon. $106 later they sent it back working. Now it won't zoom and it won't take pictures. I called Nikon and they said send it back to us. I really don't want to spend another $100. I have a large Canon camera for about 7 years and have never had one bit of trouble. I will never buy another Nikon. I will probably buy a compact canon. I would not recommend getting a Nikon! July 12, 2014
June 24, 2013
The complete package I absolutely love this camera. Bought it as a present to myself after seeing the S9100 (my daughter's) in action. She experienced a problem with the lens being stuck in the open position more than once so after some research I decided to go with what I felt was the more stable model. I owned a Nikon SLR from back in the 80's and used it to experiment with photography as a hobby. With the onset of the digital camera, I migrated to the new medium and loved the versatility it afforded. This is my third compact digital camera and is by far the best. The quality of the shots is exceptional. Great wide angle to telephoto shooting capability and offers excellent shooting in low light conditions. My only criticism is the location of the popup flash. It just gets in the way. I have to make a mental note to move my finger away before shooting. Then it only pops back into the frame when you turn the camera off. Seems like a minor nuisance when compared to the benefits of owning this compact, versatile performer. My shots look professional , operation is worry free and the operational cost minimal. Would recommend getting a backup battery.....you won't regret it. May 17, 2013
My Nikon S8100 I have a hobby of procuring broken digital cameras for repair and then re-sell them for profit. I was sold on Samsung. When Christmas came around, I decided to get my son a digital camera. I had plenty of Samsungs but I wanted something better. I got him a Nikon S6000. I was totally surprised with the simplicity of operation and the high quality of the image. Needless to say, I wanted a Nikon. I got this S8100 and it is simply the best thing since sliced bread. I am free lance photographer and used my Nikon on a recent trip to the west coast. I submitted several images to magazines and had 70% of them accepted for publication. That says a lot about the quality of this camera. The clarity and sharpness are second to none. If you look in my camera bag, all you will find now are Nikons. I read some of the reviews and think that maybe the people did not properly use the camera. February 3, 2013
Horrible...full of disappointments. I've always owned Nikon cameras. I upgraded to this one about a year ago since I wanted the HD video feature. After a few months my picture quality was getting worse with every use. Now, I keep getting lens error and it won't shut off. The lens stays out. I have to gently tap it to go back in. I brought it back to Blacks. They sent it out to Nikon for me since I'm covered under warranty. Sad thing is, the time frame to get it repaired is 6-8 weeks. Which is long and brutal when you have kids and especially when you are about to go on a trip. Very disappointed. I'm curious to see what will be the outcome of this repair. Wish I can trade models instead of getting back this garbage. January 20, 2013

I am not able to take 2 pictures in a row. Also, none of the buttons on my camera (especially the circular button with multiple options) does not work. I can preview the pictures i have taken, but I cannot do anything other than view them. I also can no longer zoom.

Coolpix S8100 camera. Need to upload still images back to camera. Had accidentally erased SD card when downloading and need to get them back on the card. I have windows 7 system. Already tried to send them to the card which works for windows 7 system but the camera will not recognize the images.
I had saved the files with a name if that makes a difference in getting them back on the card.

Answer:
You need to get a SD card reader/writer, you can then reload onto sd card. (you don't use the camera to reload onto sd card). Very important it be a SD card reader / writer. They are readily available and do not cost much(@$15)

When I have the mode dial set on the green camera icon and turn the camera on, the LCD screen has an error that the mode dial is not in the proper position. All the other functions work - I can't seem to clear it and it is very frustrating. Can you please advise. I have had this problem of and on for about 6 months - and I've only had the camera for just over a year. Thanks

Answer:
The S8100 is not a waterproof camera and Nikon does not create a waterproof housing for this model. Our waterpoof cameras are the AW100 and the S30 and we offer a waterproof housing for the Nikon 1 J1 and J2.

My previous coolpix s8100 didn't have this problem. Even without flash on sunny days the pictures are overexposed, and the sky is a difficult subject matter to capture on a sunny day.

Answer:
I would suggest checking the Exposure Compensation setting on your S8100. Exposure Compensation settings above "0" will increase the brightness of your images and this setting doesn't reset when you turn the camera off. Instructions on adjusting your Exposure Compensation can be found on page 41 of the S8100 manual. A copy of the S8100 manual can be downloaded from this address:
http://support.nikonusa.com/app/ans...

If setting your Exposure Compensation to "0" doesn't resolve the issue then contact Nikon Support: http://support.nikonusa.com .

Answer:
There is a macro (close-up mode) on the S8100 that allows it to go from about 0.4 inches to infinity. Check your camera manual for how to use this setting, and you may wish to invest in a small tripod, maybe a Joby GorillaPod, to steady things when you're shooting. That's always been a good solution.

Backlighting is one of the shooting modes on the S8100 mode dial. It is the icon of a person with the sun in the background (see page 55 of your manual). Backlighting cannot be activated in other shooting modes.
