THIS CAMERA = WASTE OF MONEY!! I am very disappointed in this camera. I bought it a couple of years ago. About 9 months ago it started saying "Lens error" which must be a common problem. It wouldn't take pics so I sent it to Nikon. $106 later they sent it back working. Now it won't zoom and it won't take pictures. I called Nikon and they said send it back to us. I really don't want to spend another $100. I have a large Canon camera for about 7 years and have never had one bit of trouble. I will never buy another Nikon. I will probably buy a compact canon. I would not recommend getting a Nikon! July 12, 2014
June 24, 2013
The complete package I absolutely love this camera. Bought it as a present to myself after seeing the S9100 (my daughter's) in action. She experienced a problem with the lens being stuck in the open position more than once so after some research I decided to go with what I felt was the more stable model. I owned a Nikon SLR from back in the 80's and used it to experiment with photography as a hobby. With the onset of the digital camera, I migrated to the new medium and loved the versatility it afforded. This is my third compact digital camera and is by far the best. The quality of the shots is exceptional. Great wide angle to telephoto shooting capability and offers excellent shooting in low light conditions. My only criticism is the location of the popup flash. It just gets in the way. I have to make a mental note to move my finger away before shooting. Then it only pops back into the frame when you turn the camera off. Seems like a minor nuisance when compared to the benefits of owning this compact, versatile performer. My shots look professional , operation is worry free and the operational cost minimal. Would recommend getting a backup battery.....you won't regret it. May 17, 2013
My Nikon S8100 I have a hobby of procuring broken digital cameras for repair and then re-sell them for profit. I was sold on Samsung. When Christmas came around, I decided to get my son a digital camera. I had plenty of Samsungs but I wanted something better. I got him a Nikon S6000. I was totally surprised with the simplicity of operation and the high quality of the image. Needless to say, I wanted a Nikon. I got this S8100 and it is simply the best thing since sliced bread. I am free lance photographer and used my Nikon on a recent trip to the west coast. I submitted several images to magazines and had 70% of them accepted for publication. That says a lot about the quality of this camera. The clarity and sharpness are second to none. If you look in my camera bag, all you will find now are Nikons. I read some of the reviews and think that maybe the people did not properly use the camera. February 3, 2013
Horrible...full of disappointments. I've always owned Nikon cameras. I upgraded to this one about a year ago since I wanted the HD video feature. After a few months my picture quality was getting worse with every use. Now, I keep getting lens error and it won't shut off. The lens stays out. I have to gently tap it to go back in. I brought it back to Blacks. They sent it out to Nikon for me since I'm covered under warranty. Sad thing is, the time frame to get it repaired is 6-8 weeks. Which is long and brutal when you have kids and especially when you are about to go on a trip. Very disappointed. I'm curious to see what will be the outcome of this repair. Wish I can trade models instead of getting back this garbage. January 20, 2013

Answer:
Consider going to the Setup Menu and select "Reset All" to back to factory default. You may have a setting that is causing the lens to adjust focus like the Macro Mode, usually the lens makes a higher noise to adjust focus up close.

Nikon S8000 Power ON

Was this helpful?helpful0unhelpful0
Hello! I purchased S8000 late last year. Whilst the performance of the camera is pretty decent, there have pretty annoying issues- one major issue is with regard to Power ON button. Even after full charging, pressing down ON button, either does not respond or powers on and then turns its off or even worse, during a picture/video playback, the camera simply switches itself Off.
Could anyone, especially Nikon people, advise as to where is the problem. Thanks a lot!

Answer:
One of the reasons why the camera may turn off by itself is that the battery is exhausted, the Auto off option is on, the battery is cold or the USB cable is connected to the camera. Please verify settings in the Auto Off options by going to MENU > SETUP > AUTO OFF.
If you already tried all these troubleshootings and the problem still persists, you will need to send your camera for service in order to be evaluated by one of our techs:

The shutter to my camera is stuck and doesn't work anymore. We just got it and barely have used it. I think it has come off the tracks? What should I do?

Answer:
If you already tried different settings and battery is fully charged but shutter-release still not working, you will need to send your camera for service in order to be evaluated by one of our techs.

I could not find it on the display, and once the low battery icon shown on the screen, the battery completely went out in a few minutes.

Answer:
When the battery is fully charged there's no indicator. The battery level indicator will appear on the Top left corner of the screen showing a battery half full, this means its low and you need to prepare to charge it. Once the battery runs out of charge you will get a message on the screen "Battery Exhausted" and you won't be able to take more pictures.

Checking remaining battery status

I was wondering if there was a way you could check how much battery life the camera has remaining at any given time? Is there a way you can check the percentage left or even just bring up the battery icon on the screen to see how much is left? At the moment, the battery light just turns red when it is running low, and this is very annoying as I would like to know how much I have left to know whether I need to charge it or not before I go somewhere-thus preventing it dying when I am away from my charger.

Answer:
Yes you can, but don't use the card until you have tried to recover your pics. Search Google for image recovery software or take it in to your local pc shop and ask them if they can do it.

It seems to randomly take pictures but will not let me manually press the button to take them. I thought the button was stuck but that does not appear to be the case. It is in 'Auto' mode, could there be another mode that can trigger this behavior?

Answer:
Most of the time the shooting delay is caused by focusing. Press the button half way down (and hold it in) and let the camera pre-focus; when the subject is perfect press the button the rest of the way to shoot. With a bit of practice it is easy to get the perfect photo.

I bought the camara about two months ago and today right after taking a picture the lens would not close. I bought this camara from a Best Buy in Arizona. I will be back in Texas on the 4th. Do I need to go by best buy and exchange, or do I need to send it back to Nikon thru the mail?

Answer:
Verify that the battery is fully charge and just release the shutter. If the error persists or appears frequently you will need to send your camera for service.
