October 14, 2014
THIS CAMERA = WASTE OF MONEY!! I am very disappointed in this camera. I bought it a couple of years ago. About 9 months ago it started saying "Lens error" which must be a common problem. It wouldn't take pics so I sent it to Nikon. $106 later they sent it back working. Now it won't zoom and it won't take pictures. I called Nikon and they said send it back to us. I really don't want to spend another $100. I have a large Canon camera for about 7 years and have never had one bit of trouble. I will never buy another Nikon. I will probably buy a compact canon. I would not recommend getting a Nikon! July 12, 2014
June 24, 2013
The complete package I absolutely love this camera. Bought it as a present to myself after seeing the S9100 (my daughter's) in action. She experienced a problem with the lens being stuck in the open position more than once so after some research I decided to go with what I felt was the more stable model. I owned a Nikon SLR from back in the 80's and used it to experiment with photography as a hobby. With the onset of the digital camera, I migrated to the new medium and loved the versatility it afforded. This is my third compact digital camera and is by far the best. The quality of the shots is exceptional. Great wide angle to telephoto shooting capability and offers excellent shooting in low light conditions. My only criticism is the location of the popup flash. It just gets in the way. I have to make a mental note to move my finger away before shooting. Then it only pops back into the frame when you turn the camera off. Seems like a minor nuisance when compared to the benefits of owning this compact, versatile performer. My shots look professional , operation is worry free and the operational cost minimal. Would recommend getting a backup battery.....you won't regret it. May 17, 2013
My Nikon S8100 I have a hobby of procuring broken digital cameras for repair and then re-sell them for profit. I was sold on Samsung. When Christmas came around, I decided to get my son a digital camera. I had plenty of Samsungs but I wanted something better. I got him a Nikon S6000. I was totally surprised with the simplicity of operation and the high quality of the image. Needless to say, I wanted a Nikon. I got this S8100 and it is simply the best thing since sliced bread. I am free lance photographer and used my Nikon on a recent trip to the west coast. I submitted several images to magazines and had 70% of them accepted for publication. That says a lot about the quality of this camera. The clarity and sharpness are second to none. If you look in my camera bag, all you will find now are Nikons. I read some of the reviews and think that maybe the people did not properly use the camera. February 3, 2013

Answer:
Try the following: fully chage the battery using the included AC adapter. Put in in a new SD memory and format it. Re-enter the date and time, as some functions work with no date and some do not. Check the position of the rotary dial on top. Register your camera on the Nikon site and download the manual; read the troubleshooting guide near the end.

Answer:
I'd suggest buying several smaller SDHC cards and swapping them daily or at least occassionally. This way, if your camera breaks, or your SDHC card breaks, or you loose your camera, the amount of PIX or video at risk is much less. The memory cards easily fit in a wallet, are easy to carry even on international trips. Don't forget to get a second (or third) rechargeable battery for your camera, too!

Answer:
Surely if you are getting choppy playback on all videos, it must be something to do with the video card on your computer or possibly the video codecs? Or , more likely, you haven't got enough memory.

I do agree with you, it could be nice if there was some way of adjusting the sensitivity on video recording indoors where there isnt enough light in the room to record properly! Clearly if there isn't enough light for the aperture of the camera you are using, there isn't enough light?

If your camera is showing up as a PTP(picture transfer protocol) device, all you need to do is right click on the camera icon and then left click 'Get Pictures'. You should be able to transfer the pictures without the need of a driver.

For the longest time I've thought it was a computer setting but last night I borrowed a friends "better" camera to do some nicer photos and when I uploaded the photos they were already rotated.

So now I've realized that it's got to be a setting on the camera. I've gone through the camera over and over again and all I can find is how to rotate them ON the camera but still have to do them individually. It's a total pain and surely I can't be the only person to notice this "lack of" feature - or maybe I got the one lemon that doesn't rotate automatically.

Any suggestions?

I just got a brand new, black COOLPIX S8100 camera. I ordered a 32GB Class-10 SDHC memory card online for this product.

However, upon inserting the memory into my new camera - I am told that "This card cannot be used." A reason for this silly issue is not provided, and I am left to guess what I should buy next since the camera can't support this wonderful memory card and there is no information on the website regarding why this isn't working.

There is no indication that the battery is dead or low, but neither is there any light coming on. The battery was fully charged. Any suggestions for what to try?

If I set the camera for fireworks, the self-timer cannot be engaged. If I have the camera on a tripod to capture fireworks, I would want to be able to use the timer so I don't move the camera when I press the shutter.

Some pictures were just not there, but there was a "blank" thumbnail. There were also a few thumbnails that had a grey strip across the top. Before downloading, when I wanted to review pictures, I could go backwards from most recent, but could not start at beginning of card to look at the first pictures taken. Was on a trip, and the last few days worth of pictures were all there--none missing. Have a Lexar 32GB Platinum II SDHC card which is new. Don't know if the problem is card, camera, or computer. Any suggestions?

I am attempting to transfer pictures that were taken on the S8100 from my computer back to the camera in order to connect to our TV to view via the HDMI connection. The camera will not "accept" the pictures when plugged directly into the computer. If I remove the memory card and use an adapter to place the pictures on the memory card, they still will not show on the camera even though they show on the card. I have tried placing them in a variety of files on the card, but none are working. Help!!!

Once the pictures are transferred to the computer they cannot be put back into the camera. You can use a Memory Card reader.

Answer:
If you’re getting blank thumbnails in your computer after downloading it from the camera it may be that the memory card is corrupted. Try to take a few pictures without the memory card, using the internal memory of the camera and then transfer them to your computer. Format the memory card using the camera.

Nikon CoolPix S8100 - Camera purchased new in Dec. 2010 and used less than 3 hours total. The camera will not turn on and the battery will not charge in the camera (via computer) or on it's charger. The green light blinks once or twice, then nothing. Lens is still extended on the camera from when the battery went dead.
The battery has been used and charged about 5 times, Is it possible the battery would go bad this fast, and how can I tell if it is still good?
