The complete package
I absolutely love this camera. Bought it as a present to myself after seeing the S9100 (my daughter's) in action. She experienced a problem with the lens being stuck in the open position more than once so after some research I decided to go with what I felt was the more stable model.
I owned a Nikon SLR from back in the 80's and used it to experiment with photography as a hobby. With the onset of the digital camera, I migrated to the new medium and loved the versatility it afforded. This is my third compact digital camera and is by far the best.
The quality of the shots is exceptional. Great wide angle to telephoto shooting capability and offers excellent shooting in low light conditions.
My only criticism is the location of the popup flash. It just gets in the way. I have to make a mental note to move my finger away before shooting. Then it only pops back into the frame when you turn the camera off.
Seems like a minor nuisance when compared to the benefits of owning this compact, versatile performer.
My shots look professional , operation is worry free and the operational cost minimal.
Would recommend getting a backup battery.....you won't regret it.

My Nikon S8100
I have a hobby of procuring broken digital cameras for repair and then re-sell them for profit. I was sold on Samsung. When Christmas came around, I decided to get my son a digital camera. I had plenty of Samsungs but I wanted something better. I got him a Nikon S6000. I was totally surprised with the simplicity of operation and the high quality of the image. Needless to say, I wanted a Nikon. I got this S8100 and it is simply the best thing since sliced bread. I am free lance photographer and used my Nikon on a recent trip to the west coast. I submitted several images to magazines and had 70% of them accepted for publication. That says a lot about the quality of this camera. The clarity and sharpness are second to none. If you look in my camera bag, all you will find now are Nikons. I read some of the reviews and think that maybe the people did not properly use the camera.

Horrible...full of disappointments.
I've always owned Nikon cameras. I upgraded to this one about a year ago since I wanted the HD video feature. After a few months my picture quality was getting worse with every use. Now, I keep getting lens error and it won't shut off. The lens stays out. I have to gently tap it to go back in. I brought it back to Blacks. They sent it out to Nikon for me since I'm covered under warranty. Sad thing is, the time frame to get it repaired is 6-8 weeks. Which is long and brutal when you have kids and especially when you are about to go on a trip. Very disappointed. I'm curious to see what will be the outcome of this repair. Wish I can trade models instead of getting back this garbage.

Lasted long and a great beginner camera!
I received this camera in 2010 and have used it ever since. We bought an extra battery pack and a case cover for it. The extra battery pack was definitely worth it! It took amazing pictures even though i was a beginner with the camera. I mostly wanted to take photos at night and the flash is amazing!
My only problem was taking photos of the moon, i eventually learned to set manual settings to take decent enough pictures of the moon without flash and with an extremely steady hand.
about a year ago i ended up dropping it onto a tiled floor from two feet in the air while the lens was fully extended. i tried to fix the lens myself, but i had to get it repaired. The warranty "fixed" it but didn't replace the broken part with a new one. so ever since the lens sometimes will blur and for an hour it won't open or it won't focus at all. I've dropped it at least 5 more times after that and i now need a completely new camera.
Don't get me wrong..i love the camera and i appreciate it and held onto it tightly wherever i wen, but what cause the camera to fall so many times was the wrist band. it's horrible and i could barely put it over my skinny wrist twice.
I took my time to learn to use a camera and now i'm off to a better professional one with a neck strap. This is a perfect camera for anyone who wishes to upgrade later on. its at a great value and has wonderful features if you know how to use them! It took me 2 years to discover and dominate the features!
