not very good If you want to take scenery and photos in the daylight it's a great camera. However, I have found the fireworks, night scene's, I have had very poor results. This is my first Nikon product and I'm not impressed August 19, 2010
Incredibly good reolution I use this camera mainly for work, taking outdoor shots as well as detailed photos of various parts and components. I'm amazed by the clarity and perfectly balanced exposures. We are able to zoom in on photos on the computer while retaining beautiful resolution. Another great feature is the compact size. This is the first camera that I've ever had that can be carried comfortably in my pocket. Amazing little flash too. August 18, 2010
Excellent This camera surpassed all expectations. Very good close up and long distances. August 17, 2010
A Great Camera for the Price I love my camera! It takes great, clear photos fairly fast. It has good memory and the touch screen is VERY nice. The only thing about the touch screen is that it takes some getting used to before being able to use it to its full potential. The only other potential problem is that some times it has trouble focusing on close up objects, even in the correct mode(one with the picture of a flower). This is especially true with white objects(like small flowers). All in all it is a great camera at a very reasonable price and I am very happy with my purchase. August 17, 2010
camera took good photos when it would work this model cool pix S4000 took good photos but the battery would not hold a charge, the photos were blurry if the camera wasn't held very still, night photography did work well even on the automatic setting. Eventually the camera lens would not open and the camera didn't function this was with in 2 months of owning and taking less than 500 photos. I have owned other Nikon camera and been VERY pleased with them, I would not buy this camera again but I would purchase other Nikon cameras. August 12, 2010
So many great features and choices. The S4000 was a surprise gift and didn't know how to use. It was such an enjoyment learning all the features but know that I know how to use them... Its even more fun. I used to think being the one taking pictures missed out on the event but now I'm involved in how I want picture to come out. August 8, 2010
great camera for price for the price of the s4000, I cannot argue at all. Takes great pictures, and the ability to edit them after I take a picture is wonderful. The zoom is not to terribly great, yet you can take the picture from far out and then zoom in and crop after you take the pictures. I just got pictures of two football players at training camp, standing nearly fifty yards away from me, and after zooming and cropping you would swear that I was standing right next to them! The touch screen is not so touchy, often times it is really hard to get it to read what you are trying to do, but with anything it just takes a little practice and once again for the price I can't complain. The camera does take a little bit to turn on, so if your expecting pictures to happen, you have to leave the camera on which is hard on the battery. This is one of the things about older camera's I preferred, the ability to turn on and shoot but the trade off of all the other features makes it very easy to get over! August 5, 2010
This camera is easy to use This camera has many great features that are easy to learn how to use. It's compact size makes it good for travel . It fits easily in a pocket or purse. I am also happy with the quality of the pictures. August 2, 2010
Great Value I have a Coolpix S4000. It is very simple to use and take very high quality photos. I find it much easier to use than my husband's Canon EOS. I have it with me all the time and have gotten many photos that I would have otherwise missed. July 31, 2010
compact, easy to use and understand. like editing features after the picture has been taken July 28, 2010
Quality photos, compact camera and easy to use. The instruction booklet included with the camera is bare bones. For details, the included DVD that contains the complete and detailed information about the various options for picture taking must be viewed at length on your PC. However, the point and shoot features are extremely easy to use and almost always result in a satisfactory image. July 27, 2010
It's a reasonably good product but not top of line Not very satisfied. It's not very intuitive and difficult to use. For example it is so difficult to get battery life indication on screen. Touch screen does not sense the touch many times. Manual is on CD. So you can not refer to it when you need during travel. Many times it would not read from card during video recording. July 27, 2010
This camera is so much fun! I received this camera for Mother's Day. I love it! It is wonderful to just drop it in your purse when you are going somewhere. It is easy to use with the touch screen and the pictures are great! July 27, 2010
Outstanding value in a compact package! My wife bought this camera for me while on vacation at Disneyland. We had our Nikon D50 with us, but trying to get all the moments with three of our grandkids was a stretch. She bought the Nikon Coolpix S4000 for me and we were both ready to keep up with the kids. The quality of the photos were amazing. The shutter speed was a pleasant surprise for a compact, and the battery life was phenominal! We have recommended this camera to our friends and family without hesitation. This camera has features I never dreamed in a compact. July 25, 2010
Great Camera with limitations The Coolpix S4000 is a very nice, compact point and shoot camera. It takes decent pictures in automatic mode and offers a scene mode that compensates for various situations. User changes are limited. Some things I liked on an older Coolpix are suprisingly not available on this upgraded model. I miss the voice memo mode. The S4000 only has the ability to add voice memos to a picture not by itself as a voice capture. Although the touch screen is nice it is not as functional as other cameras including other touch screen Coolpix models. July 24, 2010
Love it! Good for the pro wanna-be. Positively LOVE my nikon S4000. I am "no pro" but my pictures as well as movies are turning out great. My husband races dwarf cars and this little camera certainly does the job. I like the automatic features such as the zoom (I never could figure that out in my last camera), I love the large clear screen and the stylus pen is a real kick. Thank you so much July 24, 2010
i like this camera. my wife does too,. i bought it for her. takes very good pictures July 24, 2010
Very Nice Camera Takes great pictures.Very easy to use and figuring out all of its functions. Very convenient to carry on your person. July 24, 2010
User friendly This camera is perfect for a non-professional photographer like me...it has easy to use settings and the pictures come out great! It even tells me when someone blinks or doesn't smile!! I highly recommend this camera to those of you who like their camera to do all the thinking for them!! July 24, 2010
I love the quality of photos, ease of use. My only problem is taking pictures in bright sun as I cannot see the screen. It would be nice to have an option to look thru viewfinder. July 24, 2010
Nice pocket camera Nice compact little camera with fun features. Holds the charge well. July 24, 2010
Very pleased.Love the size and pictures. Easy to use. No finger smudges if stylus is used,(recommend this)Will take time to recognize all symbol meanings, never the less, nice camera July 23, 2010
Couldn't ask for more in a camera! The Nikon S4000 was my first camera, and I couldn't have gotten a better one for the price. Its sleek and stylish design, point and shoot simplicity, and extensive editing features right on the camera makes for an incredible camera sure to last for years! July 23, 2010
This product is nice to have HD 720p movie and tough panel feature are one of feature I woud like to have. It is nice for portable camara. July 23, 2010
Love the camera. It's new so I'm still learning all about the features. July 23, 2010
great It took me awhile to learn some of the features. It takes great pictures. I love my camera! July 22, 2010
Love the camera!!! The camera should come with a full instruction manual. I have trouble downloading the pictures to e-mail to others. July 22, 2010
Almost everything I wanted in a camera I love the size and speed of this camera. The picture quality is excellent. Touch screen functionality is great! I have two suggestions for improvement. First, regarding video. The editing software is not as easy to use or as versatile as I would like. Freeze frame photos from video make low quality prints. Some on-camera video editing functions would be a nice plus. Secondly, I would like more camera situation settings (action, text, close up, low light) and would like the icons to be more intuitive. July 22, 2010
This camera takes great pictures. I wanted a camera that was small enough to fit in my purse that also would take great pictures. This camera is simple to use, and all I have to do is point and shoot. I can hardly believe the quality of the pictures compared to my other digital camera. An added bonus is the long lasting rechargable battery. I am tickled pink. July 22, 2010
Excellent I love my camera...I have had a few cameras before, but I fell in love with this one since day one.....I just love it. July 22, 2010

Whenever I take a video over a minute or so, the camera says the file did not save or no file can be recognized or something. Can anyone tell me how to fix that, because time-limited videos aren't that fun.

Answer:
I tried one of the approved cards (Lexar 8Gig) and had the same problem. Worked for the first video (about 3 minutes in length) then when I went to do the next video, I received the same "can't read" message. Very frustrated with this camera for video.

Answer:
You are probably using a memory card with too low of a speed classification. On the SanDisk SD Card, there is a number inside a "C". If this is not 4 or more, the write speed of the card is too slow.

Answer:
If the light is too dim, the shutter speed will be very slow, and any camera motion will blur the photo. Also, make sure that you are not "punching" the shutter button. Press slowly, and gently.

Answer:
make sure you have the right adjustments for exposure, like:
white balance in auto mode
ISO sensitivity auto
AF area mode auto.
(all of this if you're novice) and when taking a shoot make sure you press at half the shutter to focus and when the focus area goes green press fully the shutter. Another thing will help you is:
AF assist - auto
vibration reduction - on
motion detection - auto

too small of a card, settings for pics set too high. On mine with a 4GB card I can only get 250 pics at max resoulution. Recommend 2-4 GB card for this camera, unless you want to constantly download photos.

Answer:
Pictures taken are recorded as images files. The size of the files and with it the number of images that can be recorded, depends on the size and quality of the images. Before shooting, choose an image mode according to how you plan to use the picture. See page # 48 of the User’s Manual.

Ex. If you have the Image Mode set to 12M you can only record 5 pictures in the internal memory. If you set it for 3M you can record 46 pictures. Internal memory is approximate 45MB.

Answer:
Make sure you are using SanDisk cards, and double check the speed class of the SD Cards you use. I was unaware that they had such a thing, but the Coolpix 400 requires a card with a speed class of 4 or higher. On the face of the card, right below the red part of the label, there is a number enclosed in a "C". This indicates the speed class.

Answer:
How many photos were you trying to import? I use a mac as well, and it can take sometime for iPhoto to read all the photos on the camera. I had 800 photos on my camera, and it took almost a minute for my camera/photos to appear in iPhoto.
Try closing iPhoto, then connecting your camera. iPhoto should automatically open and read the photos and then give you an option to import the photos.
