Move on I expected more from a Nikon. Love the size and the touch screen. No problems in daylight, but I cannot take pictures in dim lighting or at night! So frustrating! December 18, 2011
Great Camera, few problems I got this camera S4000, for last Christmas. Abolsutely loved it! Great, sharp photos and nice videos. Nice features (ex- sunset, snow, fireworks, ocean, portrait, up-close). Really helped me out with creating music videos, and excellent sports setting. Took many softball in-actions pictures for my team..worked well for that. Takes very nice up-close photos of flowers, nature, etc. Amazing portaits (full body pictures). Although I ran into a few problems. Sometimes I would just be starting a video and the screen would flash up saying "Card could not be read". And then it would stop. Other people have had that problem. Tried many different cards, same problem. Other than that, GREAT camera! I dropped it once and then lens smashed in, inoperative. Getting a new one! Repair is expensive. I recommend for anybody! Thin for vacations and traveling. November 25, 2011
Best compact I ever had! I bought my first Nikon S4000 in April 2010- I took thousands of clear, sharp, great pictures-then in Oct 2011, it just stopped working. The camera would not turn on. I was assured by Nikon that the life of a $150 camera is about this long, when used alot. I agree, I've had lots of other brands & they only lasted this long. It was still disappointing, but I will buy another! LOVED IT!!!! It never let me down- until Oct. of course. November 16, 2011
Good pictures, but camera did not last long. I bought this camera just before my vacation and 3 weeks into my trip across the United States the camera developed a dark spot on the pictures and the viewing screen therefore I had to borrow a camera for the rest of my trip. October 12, 2011
potentially great p&s flawed by poor usb connector Took great pictures for a few months, then the onboard usb connector failed and is not covered by Nikon's warranty, so camera is essentially useless. ($85+ repair). October 4, 2011

Camera charges fine, but when in fash mode, the red light blinks for a while, then the battery exhaused screen comes on, and camera shuts off. I can turn it back on immediately, use it in non flash mode and I can take dozens if not hundreds of pictures.

Slow recovery time after taking a picture? Why?

I use the auto focus method (press down half way, focus, take the picture) and it takes a lot of time for the picture to save and re-set to take another picture. Why is this? Could it be the memory card? I have a 2G HP card. Is it a setting i have set? I have re-set the camera to the default settings. Nothing seems to speed up the recovery time.

Answer:
Look at the class rating of the SD card the higher the class the faster the write speed. Suggest you get a class 10 SDHC card, 8gb or greater if you are going to use the movie mode.

Answer:
There is a slide switch on the side of the memory card, slide it in the opposite direction it is now, usually up. That is a write protect switch.

Apparently my coolpix s4000 is setup to create separate folders for pictures, not sure if its a date thing or some other reason but this is tedious when it comes time to offload the pictures to my computer. After a period of time when I am ready to store pics to my pc I go into DCIM folder and I see usually a series of folders labeled 100NIKON, 101NIKON, 102NIKON, etc. I tried looking around settings for a reason this is occuring but found nothing. I would like there to be just one folder if possible. Any help would be appreciated.

Please verify that that you have the correct option selected for the Charge by computer, MENU > SETUP MENU > Charge by Computer. Also, try it with a backup battery. If the problem persists you will need to send the camera and the charger to be evaluated.

My Coolpix S4000 would not power on. I thought it was a battery issue, but a voltmeter showed the battery is properly charged.

After some Googling, I found a suggestion of pushing power & shutter button at the same time and the camera powered up! I had to set the date and time again. I also have to push power & shutter together to power down, but it will come on and take photos. After setting the date and time once, I haven't had to do that again.

Any ideas what caused this? Can I reset the camera so that I just need to push the one button to power up/down? Thanks.

Answer:
You need to charge the battery, follow instructions in camera's manual. If you do not have it it can be downloaded here:
http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16763/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzM3MzQ1ODAxL3NpZC9PdWgzOHFZaw%3D%3D
If you have tried charging the battery and it doesn't hold a charge than you need a new battery.
