Mixed Feelings! This camera was not worth the money I spent when it first came out which was around 260.00 bucks, and that was a sale. Reg price was about 285 or so.. It would be better if the cost of the camera was around 140 bucks! Anyway, the camera has a thin frame so if you bump the camera around the flash area, the flash won't pop up. Nikon woluld not warrant this and blamed me for the bumping /flash problem! I had to fix my own flash problems by taking the side casing off and bending the casing back out, using a little plier and little rag so it would not scratch up. No more problems with the popping up of the flash. If the camera was built more sturdy, I would not have had this problem, to begin with ! Sure...an average person may bump or drop a camera and then expecet it to survive a minor impact, for the most part. I never had a lens problem, like I read from other's reviews. It records great movies with GREAT stereo sound and with just a push of a quick record button...that I like. No fussing with the menu to find the movie mode. I rate this camera a four out of five. Not the best...not the worst. Picture quality is good at times and not so good at times. It depends on the operator, I suppose or not. Need to learn what settings are the best for the situation at hand. If you can find a refurb..then it's worth that cost not full price! Nikon charges way to much for thier point and shoots. I own several Nikon cameras from point and shoots to the D7000 and my fave one is .... the D7000, the cat's meow! I love Nikon's line of DSLR's. I own a D40, D90 and the D7000! All are excellent! Wish I could brag about the point and shoots like I can the DLSR's. November 30, 2011
Great zoom, but..... Has a great zoom for its cost. flash goes out in an unconfortable place. Im having truble with on-off procedure, it stocks and dont open the lenses. October 11, 2011
i should have not bought this model digital camera is designed to just point and shoot. I always have bad pictures on this camera compared to my 4-5 yr old canon powershot. The shooting modes are not functioning well. 2 pictures of the same subject seconds apart gave me 2 different bad shots most of the time. I "reset" and still is bad. I am in touch with the co. and no satisfactory resolution August 18, 2011
Would not buy this camera, flash always breaks Would not buy this camera, flash has broken 3 time on me in a year span and now out of warranty and Nikon won’t do anything about it, would not recommend Nikon in general July 29, 2011
Great close-up shots Beside the regular shots, two of the specialty shots being Macro and Panorama I am really impressed with. Close-up shots capture the fine detail of flowers that are amazing. The panorama shots with the software stitching and feature to border and text for the picture make me happy. July 13, 2011
Love this camera It can do alot for a little camera . Picture clarity is excellent zoom lens is great . But as the problem with mall digitals i have owned ,It malfunctioned in less than a year . sent it back to NIKON for warranty work ,was fairly quick about it. But returned camera minus cover for one of cord plugs and camera seems to have another issue now unrelated. So back to the shop ......I was expecting more quality and durability out of a NIKON thats why I spent the extra money .... May 14, 2011
this product has great features I've bought this camera and very happy and satisfied,I take best photo with this camera with high speed and best Moments,coolpixs8000 camera is really extraordinary. May 13, 2011
Great pictures. Faulty design. I got this camera in September 2010. It has been sent in to be repaired 2 times already and its only May 2011. I went with a Nikon brand because I thought it was a really good brand. After using this camera and having so many issues with it I will not be purchasing another Nikon. May 12, 2011
Excelent camera I have to tell you since i bought this Nikon S8000 I turn fan of this brand, in the past i had, canons, sony, and never is like this... Excelent zoom, excelent quality of pictures, Love how to focus, The size is small for the quality, records excelent VIDEO, so if you want to April 25, 2011
I liked it but.... Bill i have the exact same problem, and now it got worst, i bought it in may 2010 and like 2 months ago, it started to turn off by it self, but now it even have some problems with the screen, it has some stripes and i dont have idea why and i never smashed it or anything and what makes me more angry is that i had the warranty but not the money to send it from México where i live to Usa and get it fixed, and here they only have a place to fix it in the capital city and that's also way far from me. I'm Glad that i saw this review cuz' i was about to buy a new one because i liked tris camera so much at the beggining that when i saw the outlet sale i got excited, but i think if the company nikon have had the same kind of complains about this product they should correct the problem and work in the quality and also give moré support to the costumers i thought this was a credible brand and also with quality, now i just don't think so May 25, 2011
Great Camera I had a Nikon Coolpix before, it was good, but this one is even better. It's fast and easy to use. It takes great photos. April 10, 2011
Lens error Had the camera a couple of months and it started to turn itself off when I would turn it on. I would turn it on and it would turn itself off…over and over again making the camera unusable. Sent back, and it was fixed under the warranty. Not the only one to have this problem…hope it doesn't do it after the warranty expires. May 23, 2011
New battery not good, no help from Nikon Service C I bought Coolpix S 8000 in LA, California. Did not start using it until a month ago. I shot a few shots. The battery ran out and I have tried every way to charge the battery and I cant charge it. I bought this camera on my brothers card, who is in California. I have no use for camera and I dont know what to do. I and my brother are not talking, so I cant ask him to do anything about it. April 4, 2011
compact camera with professional quality prints Has many cool features like smile detection and blink warning. takes impressive photos on zoomed in objects. Very quick in taking pictures so you don't miss the moment - especially when you have kids! April 4, 2011
Absolutely, positively outstanding! Absolutely, positively outstanding! Only a Nikon with it's superb Nikkor AF-S DX lens could have achieved this level of quality! Thanks Nikon and GOD/BUDDHA bless the Japanese people in this hour of tribulation.... :>/ April 2, 2011
Poor quality and construction Had camera for 3 months before i had a lens problem (wouldn't retract). Followed customer service info on returns. Sent in and waiting back on the factory. Only used the camera like 15 times and always kept in a padded case when not in use. Very disappointed with the quality of the camera and cannot recommend this product or any Nikon camera. March 20, 2011
Extraordinary Camera! The camera is extraordinary! You have the slim form, easy to use buttons and operations and auto flash! The 14.2 mp is outstanding and it create beautiful photos! It fit well into your pocket. It is a perfect combination of style, form, function and technology! BRAVO!! March 18, 2011
Great except for Nikon needs to improve on the anti-shake because it doesn't fully work all the time especially at night even with the flash on. March 15, 2011
Started out being a reliable camera Started out being a great little camera....Then after owning it a few months, the left side of the LCD Screen became cloudy with vertical lines in it making it impossible to view the menu or function properly. It was still well before the warranty ended, so I sent it back to the factory. I waited three weeks and heard nothing so I phoned the Nikon repair department and was informed that I must have dropped it, therefore it wasn't covered. This was totally WRONG. I was taking a picture when this happened & I always carry it in a cushioned case. So to make a long story short...they charged me $107.46 on a LCD repair that was defective or had poor quality from the beginning!!! I also own a Nikon D300 and never had a problem with it. I've always owned Nikons exclusively. In the future I will recall this bad experience before buying Nikon again!!! VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! March 10, 2011
Excellent Pocket Camera This is just an outstanding point and shoot camera in every respect. The lens performs very well across the entire zoom range without distortion. Color and white balance are very good. This camera has been in my pocket for nearly 8 months ... except for when I wash my pants (That would probably void the warranty???) The only down side is that I am a professional and I really need to capture in RAW (NEF/NRW). JPEG can not meet my needs. So I bought a P7000 to replace the S8000 as my everyday and backup camera. February 12, 2011
AWESOME!!! :D:D This camera has been one of the best investments so far. I love it! It travels great but I've have dropped it a couple of times and the only damage it's done is the flash sometimes won't pop out... great for having fun but also for close-ups. I would recommend it to everybody. February 6, 2011
Great Camera!! I recently bought a Nikon D7000 < also great camera... but I still carry my Nikon S8000 with me all the time. I like to shoot in 16:9 wide screen mode. I also like the flat profile... not bulky when caring it on my belt in the leather case. CONS: The only thing I can say is that the flash is in a weird place... my finger is usually on top of it when I hold the camera. On occasion it has also locked up... so that I had to take out the battery and put it back in to "reboot" the camera. Nikon, fix a few bugs and speed it up a little at startup and you will have an amazing point and shoot camera. January 23, 2011
Firmware Update For those having problems you should download the latest firmware, v 1.1 and following the installation instructions. It fixes quite a few of the problems. January 9, 2011
More camera than I need Have had the S8000 for a week and already taking best picture of my life. January 9, 2011
overpriced I am so disappointed with both camera and service, my 10 year and 5 cameras long preferance of Nikon is now ending. initially the box contained no user manual. Annoyingly Nikon protects this top secret document so hard, i still do not have a copy. WHY do they require the serial no of a product purchased in North America to make a printable version available on the website?? Poor service, it is! And as the camera goes, it is so slow and so demanding to good light conditions, it performs well below its price. I am so sorry. January 7, 2011
Several issues I brought this camera in May for my birthday present. I was looking for a new compact digital camera with high image quality and superior zoom. Something I could use instead of my big Nikon D3000 at the time, the S8000 seemed to be the logical choice. At first, I loved this camera. It took great close up shots and it was easier to get "up close" to far away images with the 10x zoom. However as time progressed, I've had to send it 3 times now. It's only been little over 6 months. The first time, was a lens error. The camera stopped focusing. The next issue I had shortly after was a flash issue. It would take one huge flash and not save the picture, or the flash wouldn't work at all. Now it has been sent in for a third time for another lens error. Not what I wanted, I missed Christmas and New Years pictures because of it. This will be the last Nikon Compact Digital Camera I will buy. However I still am a loyal Nikon D3000 user. Pros: ~superior zoom for its size ~superior image quality ~Quick power on ~HD video cons: ~unreliable** at least for me ~Grainy indoor shots January 6, 2011
It keeps shutting off! The first 3 months this camera worked beautifully. It captured stunning photos and I couldn't have been happier with it. Around the fourth month it started shutting off randomly causing me to miss many photo opportunities. Now it won't even turn on. I'm extremely disappointed with it. January 4, 2011
very disappointed I have had my camera for about 6 months and have had very few complaints with it. Now I am in the Bahamas on vacation and it has quit working. The lens does not move in and out properly and the motor makes a funny noise. So, I am on vacation planning to take a bunch of gorgeous photos, and my camera is not working. Fortunately, I did bring along my S550, but I have gotten spoiled by the superior photo quality of the S8000. This is my third pocket Nikon in three years. I do wish they were more reliable like the old film Nikons. January 3, 2011
has some issues... I've had my S8000 for almost a year and used it mainly in the auto mode.. That said, I've gotten some good outdoor shots, but inside shots are grainy and noisy. My biggest peeve is that it's impossible to use in bright sunlight with only a screen. Without a viewfinder, I have to guess if I have the shot pointed at what I want when it's really bright outside. And living in Florida, there's a lot of sun most days. The flash is also ridiculously placed. Other models have it on the front, and this one should too. I've had other point and shoot cameras with much more successes, but I keep trading up for the maximum megapixels available. This was not what I had hoped for. January 2, 2011
Better to buy a brand new camera I bought a refurbished camera from Nikon, trusting as manufacturer they will double check the quality of the product. First at all, i couldn't never turn it on, the AV connector is not working, so i had to get another battery charger and only use SD card storage for my pics (because i cannot use the internal memory). Now, after two months of usage, it has becoming very low and freezes..my old canon camera works much better than this one. It was disappointing!! February 14, 2011

My Coolpix S8000 camera has been dead for about a month. When I hook it up to the computer to charge, the green light flashes for a few minutes and then goes off. However, the on/off button stays lit up. My computer recognizes the camera and I am able to download the pictures on it. The camera has been plugged into the computer for about four hours, but once unmounted from the computer, still will not turn on. Does this mean I need a new battery?
