12.1 Megapixels for stunning prints as large as 20 x 30 inches. This is plenty of sharp resolution to capture the finest details, crop creatively and produce incredible enlargements.

Huge, Bright 3.0-inch Vari-Angle High-Resolution LCD and Electronic Viewfinder makes it easy to compose and share your pictures with family and friends. The vari-angle LCD will tilt and rotate out on a 90-degree angle enabling you to get those high-angle and low-angle shots. The incorporation of the high-resolution electronic viewfinder enables you to see through the lens in any type of lighting condition. No more missed opportunities because the light is too bright to compose your picture!

4-Way VR Image Stabilization:

  • Nikon’s Optical VR Image Stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by moving the image sensor. This produces clearer, sharper results in lower lighting or unsteady conditions.
  • Motion Detection automatically detects moving subjects and adjusts the shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for camera shake and subject movement.
  • High ISO 6400 capability gives you sharper results when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. This creates new opportunities to take sharper, more natural-looking photos in lower light conditions. ISO 3200 and 6400 are available at 3MP or lower resolution.
  • Nikon’s original Best Shot Selector (BSS) automatically takes up to 10 shots while the shutter is pressed and then saves the sharpest image.

New Sports Continuous Scene Mode for shooting at up to 15fps, up to 45 frames, when you set the resolution to 3MP or lower. These high-speed capture settings help you stay ahead of the action. Whether it is a swift golf or baseball swing, or the fast action on the soccer field, at 15fps you will capture that action.

Amazing 24x Optical Wide-Angle (26-624mm) Zoom-NIKKOR ED Glass Lens - quality optics provide exceptional images. The lens is built on a proud heritage of producing precision camera optics that deliver superb color and razor-sharp results. This amazing lens offers unbeatable compositional freedom with its wide-angle (26mm) to super telephoto coverage (624mm). Sweeping landscapes can be captured as well as zoomed-in close-ups of the action taking place on the baseball or soccer field!

New EXPEED image processor ensures high-quality pictures with stunning color and sharpness. Nikon’s comprehensive digital imaging processing concept incorporates know-how and technologies accumulated throughout our long history of photographic and digital imaging development. EXPEED is custom-tuned for COOLPIX and applied optimized technologies render natural-looking pictures of incredible quality and quick response so you will not miss that special moment.

Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual Exposure Modes give you ultimate control over your pictures. The D-SLR-type mode dial on the top of the camera provides quick access to greater personal and creative control. Now, you can adjust the camera’s settings for any type of light conditions and get as creative as you want!

Nikon’s Smart Portrait System:

  • In-Camera Red-Eye Fix™ automatically fixes most instances of red-eye in the camera. You may never see red-eye again.
  • Face-Priority AF is Nikon’s face-finding technology that automatically focuses on up to 12 faces in a group portrait.
  • Smile Mode automatically releases the shutter when your subject smiles. The camera will detect the subject's smile and automatically fire the shutter.
  • Blink Warning displays a warning message should the camera detect your subject has blinked.
  • D-Lighting rescues dark or backlit images by improving brightness and detail where needed.

Mountains and Matisse This is a truly wonderful camera! I have captured eagles in flight, the majesty of Mt. Denali (McKinley), the semi darkness of the blue grotto and pictures of paintings by great artists. The technology of the camera is very intuitive. The manual settings are very useful even for a relative novice like me. Shutter speed is very good. Battery life is excellent (but I do carry an extra battery "just in case"). December 18, 2013
Over 3 years and I still love it I *love* this camera. I've had it for over 3 years and got it when I decided I wanted nicer pictures, and more control over those pictures - but at the same time didn't really want to go through the hassle of learning and the cost of getting a DSLR. Before getting this camera I found that every year I felt like I wanted a newer or better camera, and I've yet to feel the urge to replace this one. People are constantly asking me what kind of camera I use, and I am always more than happy to tell them and then to point them to the newer available models. Oh and battery life - mine is awesome. I use it for long periods of time all the time and I so rarely have to charge the battery that I often forget to when it actually does die. The one con I can think of - it is really hard to get good pictures using the flash. They almost always turn out just eh. December 11, 2011
Awesome camera I love my P90. got the P80 for my son's church.... March 25, 2011
Outstanding As a photo guide in Alaska I have used this camera under some of the most grueling condition mother nature can handle such as sub zero temps well below the rated zone. This camera responded flawlessly sure it slowed down and the battery life shortened the P90 gave me the results I wanted, sharp and true to life images. The P90 is with me at all times and has provided some stunning photos even after after a few good hits. After 9000 photos it still reacts like new. One surprise was the black and white mode, it has a tendacy to shoot towards the flat side but with some tweeking its workable. One use of this camera is taking test shots for my 4x5 the images are enough to use them as guide photos. The P90 is built to nikons high standards and will continue using it, its a nice addition to my collection of nikon gear. February 3, 2011
Love at first pic This camera is outstanding. I took pictures without reading the manual for a while. I thought they were great until I read the manual and found out what the camera can really do. Any skilled photographer can take exceptional pictures with this camera. I'm very happy I bought it. December 3, 2010

You can use the default setting of 4000x3000(12m) and if you want to mimic 35mm shoot in 3-2 and you should still have enough pixels for 20x24.

F/Stop question

The lens is 4.6mm to 110.4mm and F/2.8 to F/5.

Does that mean that at minimum zoom the diaphram opening is 1.64mm? (4.6/2.8=1.64)

Or does it mean that the lens is able to keep F2.8 throughout the zoom from min to max?

If these questions don't make any sense, perhaps the easiest answers are, what is the effective widest F/stop at minimum zoom, and what is the effective, widest F/stop at max zoom?

All questions are assumed using optical zoom only.

nothing happened! I cannot get my computer to recognize I even put the sandisk in. Then when I inserted it back into my camera, it says it cannot read the disk. However, my camera appears to have other older pictures I can look at, which I had thought had been erased months ago. I need the pictures off this disk. My grand-daughters kindergarten pictures:-( Is there anyway I can get them off of it, and why did this happen? I have never ever had a problem with my camera or accessories. I was able to view the movies and pictures I took yesterday ON the camera, so I know it worked.

Having a "Lens error" message display on the Coolpix P90 camera LCD display indicates a problem with the camera lens mechanism. We suggest fully charging the battery through a Wall outlet. Remove the memory card, and turn the camera on. If the issue persists, please contact technical support.

Answer:
The MC-EU1 remote cord is not compatible with the P90. The P90 records Time-laps movies at 30 frames per second.

To Record Time Laps movie with the P90;
1)Rotate the mode dial to Movie. (see page 10 of the user manual)
2)Press the menu button then Select > Move Options > Time-Lapse Movie
3)Highlight an interval time and press OK, then press the menu button to exit to the shooting screen.
4)Press the hold the shutter button all the way down to start the recording then leave the camera to automatically take the next pictures.
• The Monitor turns off and the power-on lamp blinks between shots.
• The camera will automatically take the next shots depending on the interval time that you selected.
Please see page 82-85 of the P90 user manual. PDF link below.

Answer:
The P90 should be able to pick up your voice from 6ft away if you are not in a very noisy environment. Try experimenting before recording your project. The P90 also has a feature called voice recording which can record up to 120 minutes of audio and the audio can be attached to a video file. You can also finder some other means of separately recording audio and later attach it to the video file.
