Very Sharp Pictures
Great lens, I use it for Portraits mostly. Tack sharp pictures.

One of the best lenses I have owned.
The versitility of this lens makes it one of my favorites. Time and again people comment upon the wonderful images obtained with this lens. Great in low light and fast action. Quick to focus. Never had a moments problem with this lens.

Excellent Lenses
This is a great lens for shooting sports and medium range lens for wildlife.

Outstanding mid distance lens
Excellent lens in all respects. Great bokeh, lightening fast auto focus (doesn't hunt). If you're serious about your photography, GET THIS LENS!

My Favorite Lens!
This is a wonderful lens. Super sharp wide open and fast focusing. It has some vignette however I don't mind it at all. There is nothing like shooting at 200mm at f2.8!

Another excellent piece of glass
I use this lens for everything from portraiture to travel and it always performs with excellence. It's a little heavy, yes, but with the build quality and high speed that's to be expected.

Great All-Around Lens
Who doesn't love this lens? It's great for sports photography, portraits, and zooming in on insects and flowers. Great f/2.8 bokeh! I have the older version, and I wouldn't trade it for any other lens.

Another Great One
It's in my bag in 90% cases. I use it for sport photography, fashion and portraits.
In all these situations its behavior is stable and robust. Auto-focus performs fast and accurate (at least on my D700 with MB-D10).
It's fantastic. if you need its zoom range - go for it. Probably there is a sense today to check its more expensive version with VR-II. But if you are on budget - go for this one.

I just got the 70 to 200 and it is too heavy. I love it, fast focusing, sharp as a tack, I also just got the D700 and coupled with my 14 to 24 I feel like a pro. I look like a pro. Thank you Nikon.

As good as it gets (Part 2)
I pair this lens with the 24-70mm f/2.8 (see that review for Part 1) on my D300. I love them both. This lens is ideal for sports photography, since a flash is pretty much useless and often forbidden anyway in that situation. I photographed my daughter ice-skating in a not-too-well-lit rink, and have nice sharp images, with nice background bokeh. Across the zoom range this lens is sharp and mostly distortion-free.
Only problem is it is so dang huge. I took my 24-70mm to Europe this spring, but left this one home and took my 55-200 VR kit lens instead (which is an awesome lens by the way -- see my review there).
Bottom line in the telephoto world, you are going to pay in size/weight as well cost to get the best.
Note, my understanding is that is more optimized for shooting in DX format, while the VR II version of this lens is optimized for shooting full-frame.
Not that there is a huge difference, but if you own a D700/D2/D3 or plan to own one sooner or later, you may want to consider shelling out an few extra hundo for the 70-200mm VR II.

Its a Nikkor Lens. Nothing else need be said!!
I was amazed of the fast focus in low light and its shapness. The lens works great with the
1.7EII AF-S Teleconvertor. This gives me the extra reach when needed.

Build Quality is #1
This lens has the best build quality.
Sharp with a fast focus motor. Excellent image quality.
My favorite lens :-)

Really versatile
I do a variety of photography from wildlife to portraits and this lens does a great job in all situations.

For all kind of sports
Six years ago the son of one of my best friend joined the junior major league hockey in Quebec
for 4 years. I had a D50 with a 55-200mm and I always had hard time to freeze the subject. I when to that special store in Montreal and I was recommended by one of the salesman to go with a higher body like he one I have the D300 and at this time the 70-200mm focal 2.8. It took me only few days to get to know this other state of art and zap I did fantastic hockey shots in action. On top of that you don't need any flash inside rings because flash would not work anyway when you are in the stands. To capture birds in action it is also excellent . The sharpness is number one and the colors are so clear, I have no more words to say

A Must Have
I use this lens the most, for portrait, wedding, and landscape. It is a must have for serious photographers. Granted there is a II, but I am just happy with this original one. The tripod collar is so easy to put on and take off. I also love the three AF lock buttons in the front when using tracking mode.
It is a thing of a beauty!

One of the best lens for Action photography
Use this lens for Low light Auditorium Dance events, where flash is not allowed. Have produced some extremely sharp photos which look like photos taken in a studio. Extremely fast focusing. This is a heavy lens and has to be used with either a tripod or a mono-pod or you will start getting elbow pain if you shoot for long durations.

Excellent lens for sports
I use this lens in shooting sports! The 2.8 & 4 aperture is very sharp. Wonderful shallow depth of fields and the VR works well in low light for I hate to carry tripods. But remember the VR works for static subjects, not moving ones. This lens works excellent with the TC 1.4 for that extra reach making this lens on a small sensor a 400 f 4. It's the poor mans super telephoto lens for sports. This is also a great lens for shooting portraits.
July 30, 2010
Great lens!
I have used this lens for both sports photography and for natural lighting concerts and theater productions at which flash is not allowed. In either case the results are fabulous on my D300 body.
The VR performance is outstanding, even in a bouncing boat taking photos of waterskiers..
Sharp, creamy backgrounds, amazing speed, fast focus. Did I say sharp?:This is my favorite lens by far. I use it for everything and recommend it without reservation to anyone looking for a world-class zoom for their DX camera.

This LENS is the Best!
This is the best and SHARPEST Nikon lens I own. It's a little heavy at first, but you get used to it real fast. Being a constant 2.8lens combined with the VR makes it a very good lens in low light.
July 30, 2010
Great lens but heavy
I have the slightly older VR1 model. It was the first step in replacing the top end of my Nikkor 18-200 VR.
First, it's everything everybody says about it--fast focussing, sharp, tough and heavy. Everybody says they can handhold this beast, I can't, I use a monopod or tripod. I just can't focus well handholding--that's a problem with me, not the camera.
Should be on everybody's dream list.

Great lens
Excellent quality product. Fast, accurate and silent. Gives sharp and define images.
July 30, 2010
excellent lens for closeups and mid-range shots
Although it's not the most compact lens and a bit hefty to lug around on trips, this lens does a great job on portraits and mid-range shots. Impeccable quality to image. It's less useful for landscape photos than other lenses but makes up for it a hundredfold in most other shooting situations.

One of Nikon's best lenses
I have been using this lens for the past two years with no issues. I shoot weddings and events, and it has been a go-to lens in a variety of situations. Fast-focus, great bokeh and very sharp images. You can't go wrong with this lens.
July 30, 2010
Excellent
I love this lens! This morning I captured the image of a male American Goldfinch on my deck feeder and it was superb. The bokeh could not have been better, and the clarity of the focus was the best. I left the VR on because the feeder at times sways in the breeze and is moved slightly by the momentum of the birds landing and departing.
July 30, 2010
great for low light...action
I use this lens for action, nature and wedding shots... it's fast enough for indoors (churches), outdoors (early morning and early evening) - puts my 80-300 f 4.5/5.6 to shame... (I have to upgrade to a faster 300)
PHENOMENAL LENS (worth every penny)
July 30, 2010
Superb lens!
A superb lens. I use it for wildlife, kids sports, and non-posed candid people shots and they don't know I am photographing them. Friends refer to my lens as the "bazooka" -- its big and heavy but that's because of Nikon quality and glass. Great investment. You will not be disappointed.
July 30, 2010
What a lens!!
I am an advanced amateur and I am using this lens on a Nikon D200. The lens is big and heavy; on the camera it feels quite balanced in your hands, even if I highly suggest to use a tripod or a monopod to get the best possible results. This piece of glass is really nice, and every time I use it the results are stunning. Perfectly sharp images, easy control of the depth of field and beautiful bokeh make this lens a winner for portrait photography too, even if sports and action photography are probably the best use you can do with it. Never had the chance to use it on a full frame camera, but as far as DX goes it gives you perfect results with no vignetting at all. Highly recommended!!

70mm-200mm FX LENS SHARP
This lens I bought as a set - 14mm-24mm FX; 24mm-70mm FX for my new D700. The lens has performed better than I expected. The optics, silent AF has performed flawlessly.
I use this LENS at Yankees Stadium and the pictures are sharp clear in 70 or in 200mm.
I like the Full Screen support with the D700.
After me thinking my D200 and the 18mm-200MM set up was awesome, upgrading to the D700 and this lens - proved to be much better than I ever expected.

I love this lens
I love this lens.
I shoot with the Nikon D300s.
I also own the 24 - 70 f2.8 and I love the 70 - 200 so much I bought another D300s just so that I do not need take it off the camera.
The 24 - 70 never leaves the other D300s either.
I always carry both cameras with me.
I am even considering a third camera just for wide angle lenses.
It is sharp and responsive even in low light. I do not want to remove it from the camera. It would be like removing a limb.
If something goes wrong with the shot it is my fault, not the lens.
It is excellent in stadiums for Football and Rugby matches which I love to shoot.

How do I attach a filter to this lens? Or does it require a very specific filter?
I have a 77mm Hoya Pro1 Digital filter, but can't attach it to the lens. There is a rubber bumper - am I supposed to remove that?
