Top preformance in this range
Pin sharp optics , fast focus and good bokeh. Very versitile if used with Nicon 2 X converter , which delivers sharp results with good focus.

Good for almost any wild life and birding
Provides incredible sharpness, fast focus, and stopping power even at wide open aperture. Sometimes causes a sharpness problem when I try to use a circular polarizer to get better color saturation or reduce glare. Works well in conjunction with the 1.7X teleconverter.

the workhorse
I am a sports photographer and I have used 70-200mm VR2, 300mmVR and the sigma 150-400mm 2.8 and I feel that they were a bit slower than the 300mm VR.

A perfect lens
I enjoy this lens and try to use it every time I can, sharpness and exposure consistensy in the whole range from 70 to 200 zoom, shalow background on 2.8 lens aperture, besides the fast and silence focus. Sharp images in low light conditions make it worth every penny.

Great Lens
This lens is great in all category's.
Very Fast Focus.
Vibration Reduction (VR) up to 3 stops.
Fantastic in low light. I shoot a lot in low light and hand held, this lens has not failed me yet.
Sealed very well
It is a little heavy but all f/2.8's are heavy.
Sometimes there is a little purple fringe.
The lens hood is plastic and falls off easily.
This lens stays on my camera almost all the time.

This is the lense of diversity.
This is the lense, if you have not chosen what you love to shoot. This lense will be there for you, when you are ready. If you choose to shoot
fashion, portraits, sports, nesting eagle or a lovely red rose, this is the one.
The VR & manual override focusing allows for maxium sharpness and fluid body movement for tracking moving subjects. The lense looks professional and has a well balance feel.

This is one of the best lens Nikon has put out. Worth the money. Great results.

My Favorite Lens
Great low light performance, sharp images, zippy autofocus. Heavy, but in a good way - balances nicely with camera body. Great low aperture bokeh. I use for weekend sports (allows me to capture cross-field action) or candid images (can fill the frame with my subject without being really up-close and obvious). Hands-down, my favorite lens.

FANTASTIC for SPORTS and STAGE!
I use this lens primarily to shoot sports (rugby, soccer) in winter daylight on open fields. I have found the 1.7 TC to be a very worthwhile addition to get really close to the action.
Plenty of light at wide open to stop action and decent bokeh for the background. If using the autofocus, you do need to ensure your focus area is pinpoint and keep it on a player (or you'll get sharp spectators on the other side, and blurry players!).
Recent assignment to shoot brightly lit stage production in a dark theatre. Even hand held results were spectacular! (Did not use TC) Could have used monopod for more depth of field, but narrow depth of field was a good result here.
Very happy with this lens. I use it for most of my work now.

Outstanding Lens
I've had that lens since 2006 and have zero complains about both the performance and results.
Even on a FX camera such as D700 that lens shines even in the toughest situations (low lighting, moving objects, etc.) A real winner in Nikon's staple for sure. Hopefully, VII is as good as mine:
that's for others to find out - I am not giving up on mine any time soon.

Great lens!
The lens is very fast and sharp. I've shot tons of sports and low-light stuff with great results. I had a problem with the lens acting strange when shooting and returned the lens twice for service. No problems were found and the lens was returned promptly. Later my pro photo friend told me that using the VR while shooting sports will sometimes create strange behavior. I have turned off the VR since and have not had any additional issues with the lens.

Super fast and super sharp
I used this lens to take pictures of a skicross race in Swden. I was suprised how fast the focus kept up with the riders that jumped past me. An exellent lens for taking sports pictures. It is also an exellent lens for nature pictures.

Excellent midrange telephoto
I have only had this lens for a few weeks, and have used it primarily for landscapes with my D700. I am very impressed with the crispness of the images at all focal lengths. The ability to handhold at slow shutter speeds and still maintain sharpness is impressive The bokeh effect is also very nice. Haven't yet used for wildlife.

Produce works great with the type of photos I do.
The day I purchased this lens I got a call to shoot a rowing practice from a chase boat. With out even having a chance to read the owners info I was out on the water shooting. Out of 100 shots in one race all but 12 were usable, I wasn't even sure I had the VR set correctly. What a great lens. My only regret is the weight of the lens coupled with my Nikon 300s.

Great lens!
This lens is fabulous! Not the cheapest, just the best! The VR system works really well. I shoot weddings, and I have not had to use a tripod. With a D7000 at 1600 ISO, I can shoot at 1/125 and get crisp images hand held. This lens-camera combo is super low noise.

Wonderful lens for action shots
I research long and hard before buying this lens. Every person, and I do mean every, recommended the AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED. I am so glad I followed their advice. I do sheep herding trials and can capture the inaction perfectly, even from a distance, as I am not allowed too close to the fence. This lens have been my main work horse.

Great Lens
I have owned this lens for over 8 years. Have had no problems, just great results. It is super fast and has great detail even in low light. This is my go to lens for all types of photos. If I can only take one lens into the field this is the one. I would definetly recommend this lens to anyone.

Best Glass for the Money
This is my work horse lenes. I shoot a lt of races, Le Mans series, AMA Super Bikes Historic Race Cars and I can get every shot I need areound the track done with this lens. Even when they are going by at 200+ MPH the focus is right there. Also the lens is great for portraits if you have room to stand back from your subject. LOVE IT.

You Must Own This Lens
This one or its newer replacement are manditory for any photojournalist and just about everyone else.
The lens is sharp; sharp enough to publish at all apertures and focal lengths. Color rendition is wonderful. The lens is built like a tank. VR is worth its weight in gold to a PJ. For others, consider this lens as a portrait lens too. Buy one and keep it forever.

Greatest Lens Ever
I use this lens with D300, and it is an absolute pleasure to use. Nice creamy bokah, fast AF, great color and contrast, sharp wide open. Pricy, but i guess you get what you pay for, and you do get a lot!

Go to sports lens

70-200mm f2.8G = Excellent
I use this lens primarily to shoot sports, but on occasion have used this for weddings and events.
Excellent optics and fast autofocus. It is quite heavy, so be prepared for the weight if you're going to lug this around for a day.
Definitely worth the money spent and have been pleased with the results.

Exceptional lens
This lens is superb. I love it. It is super fast and super-sharp. There is no change to the F stop when changing the zoom from 70mm to 200mm. It's construction is very solid - I never leave the house without it.

Excellent Lens
This is an absolutely astounding lens. I have used it a lot for bird photos. Setting it up with a D300 or D700. It tracks well and the focus is quick. The end result is impressive. Great clarity and detail, excellent depth of field control, and 200mm is perfect for small animals. I have used it as a standoff macro as well. Nikon did a great job with this lens.

BIG GUNS!!
I love this lens! Not only is it intimidating but photo fanatics always wanna take a look at my camera when I have this baby on! "Can't Touch This!" Even in the darkest theaters I've managed to capture some amazing shots! NIKON RULES!

This is my big money lens!
I am a sports photographer (youth sports thru College) This lens is sharp at all f stops, and reliable. 99.9% of my shots are at f2.8 - great for capturing individuals in action. Most times I am shooting this lens w/o a monopod (hand held) as I like to move quickly from place to place. Don't know what I would do w/o this lens.

This is my magic lens!
In my travels, I am now getting nature and, especially, wildlife shots that I could not get with other lenses. The photographs contain amazing details which are enhanced by the perfectly blurred backgrounds. This is my "go to" lens.

I call it my "Magic Lens"
I am still using the same 70-200 mm f2.8 VR lens I bought in October of 2004. Love this lens! It has such wonderful selective depth of field when shooting wide open, I call it my "Magic Lens".
Worth every penny.

How do I attach a filter to this lens? Or does it require a very specific filter?
I have a 77mm Hoya Pro1 Digital filter, but can't attach it to the lens. There is a rubber bumper - am I supposed to remove that?
