Popular Photography’s Dan Bracaglia posted a review of the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G lens, calling it one of Nikon’s most versatile and solid-built primes. Dan Havlik's review of the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G lens was posted on the pdnonline.com website, touting the prime lens. Havlik was impressed with the construction of the lens, especially the use of Nikon's Nano Crystal Coating and Super Integrated Coating. He also mentioned that the lens focuses quicker, smoother and quieter than its predecessor. Havlik said the lens "excelled when shooting wide open...the maximum f/1.4 aperture produces stellar shallow depth of field with great background blur."

Professional Photographer magazine's Ellis Vener reviewed the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens. Noting the heritage of this popular prime lens, Vener said the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens incorporates many of Nikon's proprietary technologies. He liked the bokeh created when using the lens wide open, as well as the crisp detail attainable with the lens. Layers Magazine posted Laurie Excell’s review of the NIKKOR AF-S 85mm f/1.4G lens. Calling it the ultimate portrait lens, Excell said it is that and more. “It’s a tack-sharp telephoto lens that works splendidly in low light and has great bokeh when used wide open,” she noted. Excell added, “Overall, this is one beautiful lens that is a must have for the discerning portrait photographer or anyone in need of a fast medium telephoto.”

PDN 2011 Photo Gear of the Year

Dan Havlik posted the results of the PDN 2011 Photo Gear of the Year awards, naming the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G the Lens of the Year. "If there ever were love at first sight for us, it would have to be when we laid eyes on images shot with the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G," Havlik said. He mentioned all of the features of the lens that make it a favorite including its bokeh, smooth and quiet operation and fast aperture. "But the real reason you’ll want this lens is because of the stunning portraits it can create, particularly when shot wide open," he added.
