Autumn colors signal that Halloween is just around the corner.

Sometimes I need to use my monopod for those shots, so I'll shoot as the kids return from their trick or treating so I don't need to carry the monopod around with me. Best bet, though, is to set your COOLPIX or Nikon D-SLR on auto ISO and let the camera automatically help you out by boosting its "light gathering" capability.
• Put the camera in your kids' hands. Mary took my COOLPIX to the school Halloween party (and came back with lots of solo and group self-portraits). If your children are the right ages and are interested in taking pictures, turn the camera over to them for a while—and expect a different perspective.
• Don't forget video. COOLPIX cameras and several Nikon D-SLRs have built-in video capability, so add some motion to your holiday for a complete, multimedia story. It takes some practice, but it's well worth it for the reactions of the kids and their parents to the mix of moving and still images.
• Finally, think about how you'd like to use the Halloween photos you take this year. Perhaps you'd like to use Nikon's myPicturetown to share your photos with friends and family. You can also use them on invitations for next year's Halloween party, for your own home decorations and in your kids' photo albums.
Ready to venture out? Fear not, a most spirited season awaits.
