NNikon Standard

The Nikon Standard for “shots per charge” battery information for its cameras is based on testing done by Nikon Inc.

Example: A Nikon D3 equipped with an AF-S VR 70–200mm f/2.8 ED lens captured 4,700 images when measured at 20 °C/68 °F under the following test conditions: image quality set to JPEG normal; image size set to L (large); shutter speed 1/250 sec.; shutter-release button pressed halfway for three seconds and focus cycled from infinity to minimum range three times; six shots taken in succession with the monitor turned on for five seconds and then turned off; cycle repeated once exposure meters have turned off.

Real life results will vary depending on factors such as temperature, use conditions and the number of times the battery is recharged.

UDMA
Ultra Direct Memory Access. UDMA is a protocol developed by Quantum Corporation in conjunction with Intel that supports burst mode data transfer rates. UDMA rated memory cards are rated faster than non-UDMA memory cards. Find out more.
Upload
Transferring files or other information to the Internet from a computer or to one piece of computer equipment from another.
USB Flash Drive
USB flash drives consist of a flash memory data storage device integrated with a USB interface. USB flash drives are typically removable and rewriteable, and are physically smaller than floppy disks. Find out more.
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time)
A global time standard used in the Global Positioning System (GPS); when a GPS device is connected to the camera, the UTC time is recorded separately from the time given by the camera's clock.
Unipod
See monopod.
UV Filter
A filter that eliminates invisible ultraviolet light, rendering pictures with higher contrast. This filter can be left on the lens as a lens protector.
Underexposure
The result of the film or imaging sensor receiving too little light.
Ultraviolet Photography
Refers to taking pictures in invisible ultraviolet rays (wavelengths shorter than 400mm). For ultraviolet photography, a special lens, such a UV-NIKKOR, is required.
UV-NIKKOR Lens
A lens specially designed for ultraviolet photography, it employs an optical material that transmits ultraviolet rays. Can also be used for visible-light photography.
USB
Universal Serial Bus. A protocol for transferring data to and from digital devices.
