July/August 2002, D100, Editor's Choice Award

They said it couldn’t be done: a powerful, 6.1 effective megapixel, pro-level digital SLR, within the means of advanced amateurs as well as top pros.  Fortunately, “they” forgot to tell Nikon, which shook up the photo world big time with the D100, a compact and lightweight (under a pound!) digicam using a CCD imager the same size as the renowned Nikon D1 Series.  Capable of producing 3,008 x 2,000-pixel images, the D100 boasts a full array of top=end Nikon features, among them: 3D Digital exposure control; built-on balanced fill-flash control; five-area Dynamic Autofocus; and high-speed image processing.  Storage options include IBM MicroDrives up to 1 gigabyte. Plug-and play USB 1.1 interface lets you download images quickly to your computer, and features like multiple battery capability and voice memo recording make life easier in the field.  All at a price they still don’t believe.
